Compiz
MaxHeadroom :
After installing Nvidia driver, libwnk, fusion etc ...
Have you made sure the nvidia driver is working (you see the splash ?). If so then add the line compiz-manager & to the top of the .xinitrc file in /root. Then drop out of X (ctrl-alt-bkspc) and restart X (type xwin and enter). Compiz should then fire up. You may have to add a sleep after the compiz statement (I seem to need sleep 3).
When you installed the nvidia pet did you select the "fancy option" ? If not then you need to set up xorg for fancy graphics - see Wow's compiz thread.

Brilliant CD Remaster
I just made a re-master NOP DVD as I have it pretty much configured exactly how I want, and I notice the Dougal Puppy Re-Master is WAY more competent than the original. Totally brilliant thanks.
I got it working on my geforce 2 card with NOP 4.1
install xorg_full_dri.pet
install driver (select fancy option)
install python
install libwnck
install compizfusion package
edit /etc/profile commenting out the export argb visuals line with the # character
reboot (important otherwise emerald will crash with a segmentation fault)
mp /usr/bin/compiz-xfce
chmod +x /usr/bin/compiz-xfce4
startx compiz-xfce4
that will give you a desktop equivalent to wNOP (too bad it isn't live )

Code: Select all
!#/bin/sh

xfce4-session

Taking Puppy Linux to the limit of perfection. meanwhile try "puppy pfix=duct_tape" kernel parem eater.

Thanks. I was getting lost trying to work out which file to download!Caneri wrote:Hi Gray,
Here's a high speed link to use

However whilst it provided high speed access to the iso link, that server is SLOW!!!!!!!!
Abiword details
Edited-condensed:
Abiword is nearly everywhere in Gnome related distros, so this is about it, not Nop. These are problems with it that do not bother everyone, but should a serious writer.
Abiword (and OO) claim to "import" WordPerfect but drop formatting and graphics.
Help menu: 6 out of 7 items give no response. Yes, I know help, such as it is, is available on the web. (This may be a compilation choice.)
Tools menu: Babelfish, Free Translation, Gdict, Edit image in Gimp, Google search, URL dictionary, Wiki encyclopedia. All give no response. If I try "Install New Plugins," Abiword closes.
All grammar checkers are pretty much worthless, especially Abiword's.
It seems one should be able to close a document without quitting the program.
It seems one should be able to set a default file save format like .odt instead of it trying to make you to use .abw.
It still doesn't have "smart" quotes!
These are some I noticed; there are more at:

[SOLVED]
Gray, a small problem. I much prefer Seamonkey, which downloads and installs as it should via the package manager. HOWEVER, when I try to upgrade to the latest version, the installer that is supplied with Seamomkey will not run. It does in 4.1.1, so I guess something has been removed from NOP that this installer needs. I think it is a GTK installer. Any idea what I need to install to fix this please?
EDIT......HERE IS THE FIX
I 'stole' the file libstdc++.so.5.0.6 from /usr/lib in 4.1.1, and installed it in usr/lib on NOP (simple drag and drop). Then create a symlink to it in the same directory. Then re-name the symlink libstdc++.so.5
After this, the seamonkey installer runs just fine, but I had to re-boot first for some strange reason. For more essential info on upgrading Seamonkey, read here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34667

Goffice question? SOLVED
Please disregard. I had not realized goffice-Gimp included Abiword, Gnumeric.
Tray volume applet missing
I am using No 4.1.1, have upgraded my old but very clean personal configuration. Everything seems to work pefectly except that the absvolume slider tray applet does not appear. Note: If I run Nop 4.1.1 with pfix=ram the applet runs fine.
Here are some observations:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Nop 4.1.1 puppy pfix=ram, working tray applet:
/usr/bin/absvolume mousepad: ELF, exec: opens another working tray volume applet
in /root/.xinitrc mousepad. search for absvolume:
#v3.91 volume tray applet, thanks to hairywill... v3.96 MENU_BG variable...
if [ -f /usr/bin/absvolume ];then
# if [ "$MENU_BG" = "" ];then
absvolume &
# else
# absvolume -bg $MENU_BG &
# fi
fi
exec: /root/.xinitrc opens another working tray volume applet
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In upgraded Nop 4.1.1 personal configuration, no tray applet:
/usr/bin/absvolume mousepad, :ELF exec: does nothing
in /root/.xinitrc mousepad, search for absvolume:
#v3.91 volume tray applet, . . . (same as above)
exec: /root/.xinitrc does nothing
(Obviously I can do without this, but it would be nice if someone could suggest how to fix it.

phantom absvolume
Henry:
So if you type absvolume in the terminal and press enter nothing happens ?
If you go to the /initrd/pup_ro2/usr/bin directory with thunar, right click and open trminal there then type absvolume and enter does anything happen then ?
If the last is OK then copy that to the /usr/bin directory
