Trouble installing SCIM m17n in Puppy 3.01

the already compiled celtx binary works straight away with pup3 & pup4. (It is glibc incompatible with pup2). Anyone with p3, or p4, can just download the 19M file, extract it anywhere, (it extracts to celtx subdirectory), change to this subdirectory, and run ./celtx on the commandline, or click on the file celtx.

Hello, I'm having a problems with puppy 4, gtk1 programs and utf-8.
I posted the problem here
and Aitch suggested that I ask on this thread too.

I'm writing some gtk1 programs (too long to explain here why I cannot use gtk2, but really I cannot) to be deployed under puppy 4.0. That's relatively easy, I installed gtk1 from the puppy 3 official repository and my programs work.
However, I also need to set the language to utf-8 (e.g, instead of LANG=es_ES I need LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 ).
The locale wizard doesn't offer any locale with uft-8, so I just got the locales from the glibc-i18n package of vector linux and installed es_ES.utf8 under /usr/lib/locales (and pt_BR.uft8 since es_ES.utf8 has some softlinks there)

In fact all non-ascii characters are garbled (I use utf-8 but the display interprets them as iso-8859-1)
So, after a little googling, I took the definitions for en_US.UTF-8 from my mandriva installation (where my program is working fine) and put the directory under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale, and added a line to locale.dir

Now Gdk doesn't complain, but my characters are still garbled, so it didn't really change anything.

What should I do?

I think you have to modify locale.alias file in /usr/X11R7/lib/X11/locale as well. If I am wrong, I apologize.

Thank you, but it didn't help. I previously used the locales from vector linux, I also tried the one you suggested, but it made no difference.

I don't think so, since the locale is already define, however I tried, both to alias es_ES.utf8 to es_ES.UTF-8 and the reverse, and it didn't help.

As a result of a message on another thread, I've compiled scim-canna and packaged the canna server, for Japanese input.

The canna server is taken from Slackware repositories. Scim-canna I've compiled from source.

Now, the problem is this: I can get the whole thing to work on Puppy 2.17 and 3.01. That is, I can choose "Canna" from the scim menu and it will allow me to input characters. But in Puppy 4.00, I can't enter characters.

I can get the canna server to run. I can select the canna options from the scim menu. But when scim is activated with canna selected and I try to input, nothing happens. It's as though the keyboard were disconnected.

I even recompiled scim-canna on Puppy 4, with no difference being made. My guess is that there's a library or something missing in Puppy 4, but I have no idea which one or where to look.

Do any of the more experienced Puppians have any ideas?

The Japanese Puppy team had successfully installed scim-canna to 4.00.
The pet package was made by the Forum member himajin. Why don't you
send him a PM? Yes, additional libraries were needed.

The library file is gconv4dingo.pet, and it's only needed for running scim-canna on Puppy 4.00

You are welcome. By the way, I checked your pet package repository, are
they suitable for Puppy Linux 4.00? I am especially interested in
"scim-pinyin-0.5.91-i486.pet". I just uploaded 3 pet packages for Chinese
environment but this one is missing. This one is very popular input method
among non-native Chinese speakers. If yours works, I just let people know
where to download the package. I compiled one from source but it is very
big, about 4468K

Yes, all the .pet files work in Puppy 4.00, including scim-pinyin. One or two of them need extra libraries, which is noted in the README.scim. At the moment, this only affects the qt3 package and scim-canna.

If anything doesn't work as it should, please let me know.

I noticed this morning (NZST) that some things had been changed a bit on the wiki - mainly comments removed. I don't mind if they shift things around to make it easier for others.

I also had an email exchange with tombh. As far as I know, the problems are still there; I just figured out some workarounds, with the help of a good deal of frustration, some bad language, and lots of experimentation. I suppose I should also give some thanks to Bluefish editor as well - I was able to fool around with html code offline and get an idea as to what different things did.

Maybe I should do a wiki article about using the editor.

Ramesh has been offline for several days; rather busy with something else, I gather. I ported his material over from the other wiki. I hope we see him back online soon.

And I wonder about our friend Swarup. How is he getting on?
