Downloading now! Won't be able to test it tonight as it's not my turn on Merlin (own it jointly with my Brother) but I'll give it a shot tomorrow if I have time.

With any luck anyway! We seemed to get quite a lot done with 253, three days testing of 254 will probably be enough assuming nothing major pops up. I do feel we benefitted from the week we had to look at 253.

downloaded 254 iso using wget and received following messages
/root

references to no version information available (required by wget) did not cause any problems - iso completed normally - burned to cd and booted. is openssl 0.9.8.o needed here

tested history file and commands entered from terminal.
found something interesting.

if i make entries from console (uxrvt) in live cd, creates history file in root = /root/.history command line entries recorded ok

reboot and install roxterm and make entries from console (roxterm) creates following in root = /root/.bash_history. command line entries recorded ok

Oh, you scared me. You downloaded luci-254 with luci-253, right? Luci-254 will not show that error/warning message.

Fresh manual frugal install of 254 on the old P3 test box. For whatever reason, internet connection was not autodetected on initial boot......SNS popped up instead. No problem running SNS but usually autodetect has been working.
Display and sound good on boot.
Installing Xorg_High and a browser, more in a bit.

tested history file and commands entered from terminal.
found something interesting.

reboot and install roxterm and make entries from console (roxterm) creates following in root = /root/.bash_history. command line entries recorded ok
this getting courious
after using full install for few minutes, i now have
/root/.bash_history and /root/.history

all entries made from console (roxterm) are being written to
/root/.history - roxterm is only console i am using

this is not a big deal - just trying to understand what is happening

Duh, I fixed the problem about same menu name for Abiword and Abiword Help in languages other than English.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Did I mention to please test gtk-RecordMyDesktop (in PPM) if you have a microphone. 01micko reported that the video and audio were not synced.

Playdayz.....

Is there any slight chance we could get a 'GOOD' version of Zscreensaver in the final version of this Puppy? By good, I mean one that fully works and... the way it should like activating when the screen usually blanks without having to go into Desktop, Screensaver then get the deamon started. And... how about a 'Picture' function in it? I had one way back in Mint-7 that I believe was gnome but since Mint uses mostly Ubuntu, it could have been from them. Anyway, it really worked beautiful and would be a sort of 'professional touch' to the final version.

Announcing Luci 254 - The Most Leading-Edge Lucid Ever

#489 Post by Billtoo »

I downloaded the luci-254.iso and the
luci_devx_254.sfs and then made a
puppy254 directory on my harddrive.
I clicked on the luci-254.iso to mount
it and highlighted and copied all the
files to my puppy254 directory, then
clicked on the luci-254.iso again to
unmount it.I then moved the
luci_devx_254.sfs file to the puppy254
directory.
I then ran grub4dos and after that I
rebooted the computer into the new 254
install,changed the time zone,rebooted
again to create the save file and loaded
the devx when prompted after rebooting,
I chose to increase the size of the save
file by 512mb and rebooted once more.
I downloaded firefox and vlc from
quickpet, also the Xorg-High
driver.I downloaded XFE from the PPM,
also downloaded python from the PPM so
I could use streamtuner2 which I have
installed in the root directory.

Firefox updated itself to 3.6.15
254 is working well on this pc which
has several different pups installed
on it.
My Logitech usb webcam works with Guvcview.

I am not familar with Zscreensaver

I currently use Xscreensaver which works well in luci-lucid series, if you use these scripts (ssconfig and xscr) provided by gposil when he was working in dpup series.

if you are interested in the scripts which take care of running as nobody, you can find them at following

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 26&t=49409

xscreensaver 5,12 at
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 33&t=61858

believe this one has approximately 137 screensavers

there is a earlier version xscreensaver 5.07 but not sure where it is hosted at present

i am running xscreensaver-5.12.deb that was compiled from source with help of my son, who has been using linux distro's for more than 10 years. this version has 197 screen savers

Ah yes, I updated. Thanks.

01micko, gtk-rmd, Advanced -> Sound 44100 (not 22500). I did that and the sound and video were synced.

All in at it was a pretty humbling experience. There was no audio meter while recording! Unless I missed it somehow. In fact, true confessions, I had to go to Windows 7 to get my microphone set up correctly. Once I did that and made the change in the sampling frequency, it did work.

Not in the iso. But definitely in the PPM--it helps if someone points me to it ;-)

The Puppy idea has been that the screen blanking achieves the purpose with a minimum of space used. Which is true. I love to watch the Really Slick Screen Savers myself--high cpu usage of OpenGL. I am not sure I will have time to prepare something before release, but as I say, it helps a lot if it is already done, of course.

Has this been addressed in Luci. I have had drag an drop issues before with data between editors within and to forums.

Hope this helps

Thanks majorfoo...

That screensaver along with the tiny script works nice... I will have to play with it for showing my Pictures... if your son has ever configured it to do that, appreciate it if you'd ask him how!

playdayz.... you might want to take a look at the above screensaver, looks pretty good only fault I found was in the 'preview' nothing displays in the small window other than that, it works with the various graphics in the package..

254.... working great, one tiny thing, your 'Firewall' setup gets deleted upon update from 253 to 254.

Ambiword seems nice, uses all the new fonts I added in 253.

Googleearth retained from 253 and runs good.

Icons get a bit messed on update from 253 but we can live with that.

Image
the wiki has been updated to the correct version
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy521

Will give the PPM desktop recorder that Mick mentioned a go

Been using JWM 500 in 253 and now 254
without incident (just works)

I run from DVD and it takes longer to set up
(I may be getting more particular)
It takes 30 mins to 1 hour to turn on firewall, add bookmarks
run lastpass (online password control - not for the paranoid)
and so on. Lucid with JWM is working fine during this process

For example I installed wbar (PPM) and this took some tweaking to ensure it was on the bottom of the screen and not interfering with the drive icons.

The Pupcontrol center is making a huge difference to the ease of setup
as is quickpet.

I have gone back to Seamonkey from FF as I find it simpler and it has the add ons I require.

I use the testing branch of Lucid for my day to day computing.
Stable. Fun. Thanks. :)

OK gtk-recordMyDesktop . . .

make sure you install Python with the PPM
and then right click on the sound icon (bottom right)
and turn on your mic settings

Works for me - might have to do an example . . .

Some feedback

playdayz wrote:Luci-254 is now posted in the first message of this thread.

It will be hopefully the last beta before a Lupu-521 rc..

Please test especially the things that have been updated. Please test Guvcview if you have web cam. Thanks.
Hi playdayz

My testing report:

Pristine manual frugal install on my HP550.

1. Guvcview - tested with 2 cams as in previous post - cam1 picture is displayed but Guvcview crashes if a recording is attempted - cam2 needs cam output changed from mjpg to rgb3 before picture is displayed but then recording works OK.

2. Digital TV and mplayer - mplayer as included in .iso gives black screen until full screen is selected and does not display playlist so TV channel cannot be changed. Loaded smplayer from ppm - 2 nags on startup about unrecognised version of mplayer but then worked AOK.

3. Tested samba pnethood - AOK.

4. Tested cups printing via smbc - AOK

Also did an update of the lucisave from 253 (which came from lupu520) and all seemed fine.

I will also see if luci254 runs on my ancient Thinkpad and will edit when tested. [edit] Success - boots straight to desktop and sets up wifi AOK. [/edit]

Cheers
Peter

here is my gtk-recordMyDesktop sample

http://tmxxine.com/vid/out-1.ogv
Created as a test of gtk-recordMyDesktop for Puppy Lucid development. Shows how to use a directory of background images when running Puppy from DVD. Shows the new Pupcontrol Center in action as well as a couple of other tips. Puppy is taking over computers old and young everywhere.
We are the DORG. You will be assimilated.

. . . tried uploading to Youtube and Vimeo
but they seemed unable to accept the .ogv format . . .
