I seem to recall somewhere reading that series 2 pups needed the "psavemark" parameter to define the savefile location. Vague memory though...

Thanks for that Earthray. I deleted my 214x directory and save file and started again. However ,I still have the problem of saving to the save file. I believe that only the stuff that was saved when I set it up ie wifi, xorg etc. After that nothing seems to be saved properly. There are odd things though. This time i went for xorg. This let me move icons about on the desktop. these changes are saved when I reboot. I can install pwidgets. This works fine to the next reboot. It does not appear on the screen. It cannot be opened but it can be uninstalled. Unless there is a grub command that I can use to tell 214x the save file to save too I seem to be stuck.

Ken.

Let's wait for new orders from General Ttuuxxx. More 'intel' is needed.

This is what I used to use:
Code: Select all
title 214X (hda2/214X)
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /214X/initrd.gz
kernel /214X/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PDEV1=hda1 psubdir=214X pmedia=atahd PUPSAVE=ext3,hda2,/214X/pup_save-214X.3fs
initrd /214X/initrd.gz
Adjust to suit your setup.
I think you have to add the PUPSAVE parameter *after* you have made the savefile. Otherwise it complains a lot and won't boot.

Thanks Keef
It looks as if it will work. I try it tomorrow. Going to bed now.

Well I tried many versions of Keefs extract from his menu.lst for 214x after altering it to suit system. If I use it as is except for changes to suit my system the boot process crashes complaining about not being able to load things. It then pauses 30s then comes up with more compaints. If I comment out the bit that says where the save file is it boots up sucessfuly having loaded the save file. But when shutdown it says that the file does not exist.
I am now at a loss as to what to try next..

Ken.

Not used 214x for a while, so can't test it out. But when there are problems with booting/saving I think it is best to go simple first just to make sure everything works.
I would forget the folder to start with, and keep the menu.lst entry as simple as possible. eg:
Code: Select all
title 214X
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /initrd.gz
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0
initrd /initrd.gz
I think 'pmedia=atahd' can be dropped, but if not also try 'idehd' instead. Not sure if it makes a difference, but worth a try.
In my original listing, I had PDEV1=hda1, when it should have been hda2.

I have almost given up on this. I've had a look here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=35003
and here
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/BootParametersPuppy
Everything I've tried has failed. I may try burning to a cd, install the .sfs and the save file then see if the save file works if I boot from the cd.
If that works I might try again with grub. I think if that fails I'll have to give up. It would be a pity as it seems to run quite fast on this old hardware.

Hi Starhawk,
I noted you have one of these sexy beasts namely the "Dell CPi (P2 300MHz, 128mb RAM" just wondered would SuperSulu 5.2.8.7 with the same kernel as Precise retro be any faster, Is Lucid lighter system wise than Precise??
Not really tried Precise.
Just curious because I find it interesting to hear how you keep these old girls going?

Hi,
Your problem saving stuff to the pupsave file could be resolved checking this solution:

you can also use:
instead of awk.

Regarding Opera 12...
ttuuxxx wrote:I redid the .Desktop file, I changed the icons, added a home button, added the bookmarks bar, added bookmarks, added duckduckgo and Ad Block Plus, and removed the locales, removed the kdelibs, removed the gstreamer plugins, added links to gxine plugin and flash plugin. here's the link

This works great on my newer machines, but on the old Pentium 166 it has the same issue: because it was compiled with the newer GlibC version that uses cmov, it won't run.
I know it's a big ask, but is there any chance you could recompile this under the 2.14X Top 9 environment, if you still have it? Or an environment with the older GlibC?
The older Opera 11 was compiled that way and it works. Opera 12 is pretty stable and secure, so it would be nice to have it running on a 1996 Pentium 166!
While you're waiting

Hi ac2011,
While you're waiting for someone to compile an opera 11, you might want to try running one from a "program folder". I always run opera in that manner. Although this post is about SWIron, this is the same technique I use to set up opera as a program folder.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 532#507532. Essentially, you just download the opera tar.gz and decompress it on you're home partition.
Works with either Full or Frugal install Puppies.
You can find old versions of opera here:
http://www.opera.com/download/guide/?os ... 6&list=all
At the top level of the decompressed opera folder you'll find a script named "opera:. Left-clicking it should open it. The rest of the "SWIron" thread deals with how to obtain easy access via desktop icon or menu entry.
Hope this helps.

Thanks both. I have Opera 11 working on the P166, it's the final Opera 12 that won't run because it was compiled under a later GlibC. That's the one I'm after.

Thanks! The first one definitely doesn't work on the Pentium because it was compiled with the later GlibC that has instructions the P166 doesn't understand, but I'll give the second one a try. Much obliged.

hi all
to continue the conversation about ttuuxxx's own puppy
its really all the work and creativity that ttuuxxx put into it
that made TOP such a masterpiece
that is why we are hoping he will continue his efforts
like i said on another thread
i have made many morphs of TOP
but i didnt have the expertise to to isolate everything
tinycore has worked these issues out
and this can be applied to TOP
so it can save ttuuxxx some work
and make TOP even better
its not disparaging woof-ce
just avoiding the bottlenecks
TOP forever
its history man

do you intend to continue 214 or a modification of 214 ?
do you intend to make a different system ?
do you intend to use woof-ce ?
are the tinycore ideas of any interest ?
answer if you feel like it
im looking forward to whatever you do
