Ah, now I see what went wrong. The file I downloaded is an .xz file. I need an .iso file. Where can I download that? I don't know how to open an .xz file.

I mean to say, all these other Puppy distros I have used were easy. Just download the .iso, burn it to CD, and boot-up.

This .xz thing does not boot. Or does it? What do I not know but need to know here?

There are two ways to install Quirky distro
therefore two scripts are available.

You should carefully read Barry's instructions

If you install the xz file then you should use precise 5.7.1.

Method A: If you are going to install quirky using quirky-6.1.usfs.xz to a USB stick,
then you run install-quirky-to-drive.sh from Precise puppy 5.7.1.


The method D mentioned by Barry in his install notes is the easiest of all
and I don't think there is any restrictions in what version of linux
(or even Windows) that is used. It's fast and not as confusing as method A.

I needed to install xauth_1.0.7 from PPM before kdegames would install
in PPM,dbus-1.2.4.2permissive-q1.pet,dbus_DEV-1.2.4.2permissive-q1.pet,dbus-glib-0.82-q1.pet,and dbus-glib_DEV-0.82-q1.pet were needed to get kdegames working after installing it in PPM.
Another that needed extra dependencies installed was xbmc-12.3,
libx264-142_0.142.2389+git956c8d8-2 and libcaca0_0.99.beta18 which
were available in PPM.
I found the dbus pets here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_packages-common/

I also needed to install mesa and all it's dependencies in PPM even
though some showed up as already installed, then did a reboot and
direct rendering was working, xbmc won't work if direct rendering isn't working.

The latest openssl was included in the build:

Vlc is version 2.1.4

This is running from a 32gb usb 3.0 flash drive and I chose ext4 in the Quirky
installer.
I ran the Quirky installer from my Quirky Tahr 6.0.5 install.

Anyway, this is working well and I hope this info is helpful to anyone
that wants to give the Quirky build system a try, needs a high speed
internet connection and about 10gb free space for the build
directory, and several hours to complete.
It was fun but I'm not going to do it again anytime soon :)

When I said, "I got it!", I meant to say that I understood what needs to be done. It didn't mean I know how to do it -- which I don't.

I downloaded everything, all right. But when I tried a dozen or so times to run the script, I realize I am inept. I do not know how to run this script. Still trying.

I've tried both installing to the hard drive and installing to the USB
stick in accordance with the directions laid down in the tutorial.

I don't understand how to run a script. I've never run one before. The only thing I have run are some simple commands. Do you simply copy and past it into a terminal window and press enter? I tried that and it didn't appear to do anything.

LxPup-Precise-Retro 14.02
Here's the method that I use to install Quirky Tahr to an usb flash
drive.
Plugin the flash drive but don't mount it.

Start up gparted: /menu/system/GParted partition manager

To prepare the flash drive in gparted:
Choose the flash drive.
Use the device menu to create a new partition table,(make sure you have
chosen the flash drive and not your hard drive!).
Create a fat32 partition, don't set the boot flag.
Exit gparted.

I create a hold directory in the root directory and copy the
tahr-6.0.5.usfs.xz and install-quirky-to-drive.sh files into the hold
directory.
In Rox-filer click on the hold directory, then right-click the mouse
and choose Window/terminal here.
In the terminal enter "sh install-quirky-to-drive.sh" no quotes.
The script will run and a series of prompts will come up to install
the tahr-6.0.5.usfs.xz file to the flash drive.

If you have the flash drive prepared and plugged in don't mount it.
If you don't plug the prepared flash drive until prompted in the
script don't mount it.

When the script has finished you can reboot and bring up the bios menu
(on some computers pressing the esc,F2,or some other key during bootup will bring up
the bios menu, I have to press F12 on my pc)
choose the flash drive as the boot device in the boot order menu of
the bios, then exit the bios menu with F10 and it will boot Quirky from the flash drive.

This should work from Precise puppy 5.7 or Slacko 5.7.
The faster the flash drive the better, a fast usb 3.0 flash drive
works well when plugged into a usb 2.0 port (as long as the usb 3.0 flash
drive is backward compatible with usb 2.0 and most are I think).

The way I run a script is copy it to /root. Then launch my terminal
program and type

Code: Select all

./Script_name
It may need to be set as executable. ( I'm not sure if that's necessary in
Puppy linux???) , but it's easily done by the rox filer program.
Just bring up the properties of file.
or run

Code: Select all

chmod u+x Script_name

There may be a couple of source files written in BaCon that I need in quirky-6x.

They are:

/usr/local/pup_event/pup_event_frontend_d.bac
/usr/local/pup_event/pup_event_ipc.bac

If you right click them in rox they should have a date stamp of March 2014 (or close to it).

If they are not there, or the date stamp is too old, then they may be in the quirky build system.

Can you post them here please?

I just found another pup_event_ipc.bac-2.gz (renamed it) that is larger that the first one that I posted.

After all that, I had to patch frontend_d myself. It wouldn't build with Bacon-2.4, does now, but not in Bacon-3.0 (May 2014 release). :roll:

EDIT: so I patched both now and they do build with BaCon-3.0. Something isn't right though so I posted to BaCon forum.
