I got a Raspberry pi, now how to use it?

Friends. I have bought a Raspberry pi from an auction of a owner that passed away.. i have a P/Pi book for beginners the photo inside is the same as mine. 2x usb plus on mini usb ,i use this to power the R/P. 512 memory .HDMI.,ethernet, stereo audio jack, it is in a blue plastic box.. in side are other connectors, it has a 4gig SD card, that has on it Debian 6 for linux
Now my problem is when i power it up, it asks for an eight charicture
password... i have tried some i could think of but not the correct one..
i do have spare 4 gig sd cards from my camera. what can i down load via Puppy on to the card to get it to work in the R/P. once it works i can wipe the old card and reuse it...Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

P.S. the book said. you use WINDOWS and go to sourceforge for software.....

You have the older version of the raspberry pi board

If you want to use Puppy, the easiest way is to use Berryboot.

The reason is that the kernel keeps changing and the one that Puppy used is no longer good. Berryboot is a multiboot system that uses its own kernel and keeps it more or less upgraded.

It is also a good way to try different OSs.

Hello to both of you, thanks for your help, but i "googled" and found out how to start it running. it was second hand, so came with the S/D card.
All i have to do is get used to the speed.. my desk top is running at 3 gig.
i was lucky the owner had not changed the pass world.

Hi Dancytron.. down loaded berry boot in Puppy then moved it to a blank ssd
then downloaded Debian and puppy for PI.

I have a troublesome HDMI TV

I found that I had to boot up with this in config.txt file

Then I searched for a different resolution that would work

Hi .. i find mine works ok with a hdmi t/v. but i use it with a hdmi ti vga 15 pin converter.
it is an old monitor.

now i am waiting for a sdr dongle to arrive.

I installed puppy linux using berryboot
and noticed that playmusic version is out of date
I'll try to fix that. Also gxmessage isn't installed.
