background changer broken - puppy 2.02 (solved)

The background changer accessible under Control Panel is frozen-- none of the buttons work, no change of desktop is possible. I'm not sure when this happened. I booted with a backup .sfs file from a couple of weeks ago; it has a different background but the changer is identically broken there.

I've figured out that the background isn't changed through the .jwmrc configuration file but from some files in /usr/local/bin and elsewhere, but that doesn't help me much. Is there some way to fix this?
