Does it have an SD card in it? Linux recognizes file systems, not devices. Without an SD card, there is no file system in the card reader for Puppy to "see"

Yes it has a card, but I think it's empty.

I will use it in my camera and see if Puppy sees it.

Andy

It is formatted and it has pictures.

Ubuntu-Mate recognized the reader.

SD card formatted what?

Tried different USB ports?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

If the SD card has pictures in it, he must have had it in a camera. I doubt that cameras can recognize many formats, certainly not Linux-style ext formats. It's probably FAT32.

How do I tell what it is formatted with ?

Yes, different ports do not matter.

You are probably right.

It will be formatted so that Windows can use it.

You followed the instructions and they didn't work? What did happen?

Since I can not get my sound issue resolved, it will go to the back burner for now.
