A facebook front end with security and other features built in.

Caprine is an unofficial and privacy-focused Facebook Messenger app with many useful features.

Might be worth considering as an addition, I don't think we have something like this yet.

pupradio config

Thanks gents for all your help, alfons and others.
I too was surprised that the config file was missing
from the .pupradio directory, so made one via geany
and inserted PLAYER=mpv

Now pupradio is working normally, free from those
annoying floating modules of xine.

playing videos failing

thought i'd play a couple of my video dvd's and found a couple of problems.

1- right-click on the sr0 icon at the bottom if a dvd is loaded and it gives a menu including unmount sr0, however if you do try to unmount it, it opens the dvd player tray up correctly, but almost immediately closes it again and reinitializes sr0. It should leave the tray open until you touch/push the tray for it's auto-close mechanism to work.

2- and the big problem is that a dvd can be started, the music side comes out the speakers, but almost no audio voices (it's muffled to unlistenable).

3- you still have to use the Audacious Music players File>Settings to set things up, such as Audio for the overall volume amplification.

BTW, I'm reinstalling xine through the ppm to see if the audio problem is inherant or not. I think i'd still prefer it to the others.

EDIT: xine installed ok and can play dvd's with the music and audio both working, looks like there is something up with the others. Audio/music volume is correct too, with settings changeable from within the xine control pannel being acted on.

and an extra problem I found for you :-(

4- Gnome MPV is failing to start, nothing appears on the screen.

Trying to disconnect from the internet seems impossible, it just automatically reconnects again if your using ethernet and tell it to "Disconnect from Network" via the tray icon.

That should be enough for tonight, :-)

I'll do some further bug hunting tomorrow.

Playing DVDs

To scsijon,

after loading a dvd in sr0 to play, mine plays immediately,
picture and sound normally by default in mpv.

Perhaps it helps in Default Applications Chooser
to set Media Player at gnomempvshell then save.

Right-click on drive icon sr0 to eject & open the tray.

Regards.

Weird. Some time back and Barry had a quirk where when libre office was started the first time you couldn't save, but closing that save dialog and starting save again for the second (and subsequent) time(s) and it was fine.

Had the exact same when building a voidlinux today. Oddly, if I install all packages in a block Libre is fine, installed piecemeal however, one by one, and Libre has the first run of save doesn't work problem.

Not a issue for me as I've just opted go with the block install method (which in voidlinux that uses xbps package manger ...

Code: Select all

xbps-install -y linux4.19 base-system shadow xorg xinit xbitmaps \
                terminus-font squashfs-tools alsa-utils jwm chromium tilda \
mtpaint mc galculator adwaita-icon-theme ccrypt xdotool \
skippy-xd xlunch bmon calcurse htop ncdu curl k3b chrony \
geany gparted libreoffice qt5ct guvcview audacity cryptsetup \
                kdenlive android-file-transfer-linux dbus alsa-plugins \
inetutils dhclient alsa-tools gvfs polkit usbutils p7zip \
usbmuxd wireless_tools alsaequal gkrellm yad encfs wkhtmltopdf \
                fzf octoxbps \
                gcc make gtk+-devel pkg-config gettext

Finally SeaMonkey 2.49.5 has arrived!

The Linux From Scratch guys have figured out patches for it:

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/vi ... onkey.html

But I am still getting a compile failure.

How many patches are you adding, i've got 113 available as of last night, do you want them? Some won't be relevant to us of course, as this is across all linux platforms, but a lot are.

You are building with both gtk2 and gtk3 installed I take it. It's sort of why I haven't had a go at it.

I also see they have firefox 69.0 there, not bad with only 30 patches, might have a go at building that.

Barry, another problem for you I fear.

I use 4 desktops, a for active tasks, b for local on-system background stuff (logbook, diary, etc.), c is communications programs, d for development work. Been doing it this way for decades (~early ';70's), so it's sort of automatic.

If I load all of them up with working programs (even if only loaded up and not doing or running things), i'm finding the desktop controls are sometimes loosing focus after the fourth is 'loaded' (in any order), can't swap windows, mouse does nothing, keyboard sort of works though (both keyboard and mouse are wired usb). Have to <ctl><alt><F1> and stop the x server (<ctl><alt><Fx> seems to be about the only thing still working properly), then shutdown and start again from 'cold', a reboot or xwin will allow it to come up again, but control is not properly regained for either the mouse or keyboard. Not every time of course, that would be too easy to track, but as many times as not, looks like there is a xserver problem somewhere.

thanks, but i've already tried that, no-go. I also started again with the same result, I do like the debian buster xine though and it's plugins, better than oe's was, so i'm keeping that one.

@barryK, thought i'd note that the problems i've listed all relate to EasyOS Buster 2.1.1, EasyOS 1.2 is behaving beautifully so far. I'm about to try it's patience with a bit of building though.

I obtained several patches from Fedora, doing a compile right now. Will document it if succeed.

Default sound setting 60% too low at boot up. Onboard speakers on monitors too pathetic to hear the woofwoof and don't switch into wifi until ready to d/l, stream, w.h.y. Neither is the tray icon available before set-up complete and restartX, so cannot adjust volume until it's too late!

[ejazjv - not sure what your native script is Cyrillic? Arabic? Hindi? but the originator of Puppy is BARRY not berry. I think this has been mentioned previously.Hope you have the 'a' symbol on your keyboard, as in lap, wake and blank.]

Non-working pupRadio buttons

black screen on laptop

Posted: Fri 13 Sep 2019, 18:44
by lp-dolittle
@ ejazjv

on a Dell-laptop, I can reproduce your 'black screen' problem.

There seems to exist a 'workaround'. When I repeatedly close and reopen the laptop, the desktop reappears for a short instant but just turns black again. After I noticed that the laptop's power button continues blinking constantly, I pressed this button for a short moment (less than the 4 seconds needed for the poweroff); and the desktop returns permanently and, as it seems, fully functional.

I hope this information helps resolve your issue

kind regards

Running voidlinux at present (built using wiaks scripts), and I like its zzz suspend command. My laptop display turns off when the lid is near closed by default, but the system continues working. Which is a feature I like as sometimes I want it to continue working whilst being carried around with the lid closed. Manually having to type zzz to suspend is great as it can be suspended with the lid open or closed. Pressing enter results in ...yawn! closure of zzz and resuming as before being suspended. In short, manual control is better than automated IMO.

EDIT: btw the (****) lines are appearing for each of the default applications so it's doing it a number of times, not once.
It is the 'defaults-chooser' PET, originally created by sc0ttman and last updated in 2014 by shinobar, version 0.9.

I found three bugs in it, fixed, There was that shift out of range, also a syntax error when ran 'which'utility, and /usr/local/bin/defaultimageeditor is a symlink to defaultpaint which causes an error.

Bumped to version 0.9.1, will upload the PET soon.
