Puppy Linux on USB stick runs once or twice, then breaks

#1 Post by Taxicletter »

I already installed Puppy Linux 2 times on a USB stick. That works fine, but after one or two times, the GUI don't comes. Typing "xwin" doesn't help.

I saved correctly after each run, so I don't know what I do wrong.

I did install a lot of updates from the update-panel, because I thought it was good to be "up to date". Is that the reason?

What version of Puppy?
There are about 300 different versions.
They are all different.

Are you using a save file or a save folder?

If a save file.
How big did you make it?

What format is the partition on the USB stick?

What size is the USB stick?

What computer you using?
Make and model?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Slacko Puppy 6.3

lscpu gives:
Architecture: x86_64
CPU-modus(sen): 32-bit, 64-bit
Byte Order: Little Endian
CPU(s): 4
Producent-ID: GenuineIntel
CPU-familie: 6
Model: 60
Stepping: 3
CPU-frequentie (MHz): 3290.695
BogoMIPS: 6784.37
Virtualisatie: VT-x
L1d-cache: 32K
L1i-cache: 32K
L2-cache: 256K
L3-cache: 3072K
NUMA node0 CPU(s): 0-3

I used the recommended way of saving, I think that was a file. I'll check how big it is (now not at home).

I partitioned the disk like Puppy recommended, I think that's f2sf or something like that.

I wanted to install "full" but it only let me install Frugal.

This most likely did cause the problem.

Slacko updater gets stuff from the Slackware repositories.

It has recently been discovered that there is an update to X11 that is breaking Slacko and probably Slackware.
That is probably the one that got you messed up.

This Slacko updater was a good idea, but relying on Slackware to get everything correct is an issue.

With the Slacko's I use.

I follow the rule.
If it is not broken do not try to fix it.

I never really saw anything get better using that updater.

Internet browsers are about all that really need updating and they can update by some internal process.
Usually something in their help.

Do install Slacko as a frugal install.

Puppy is designed to work best as a frugal install.
Only get some features when it is a frugal install.

Do not get hung up by the name.

In Puppy, a frugal install is better than a full install.

We are Puppy.
Resistance is futile.
You will be assimilated.

slackware is the one distro that always gets it right imo. and to be fair r that bug hit everyone, not just slackware. the problem isnt with Patricks packages. nor is it slacko or its devs (i LOVE slacko btw) the problem is users not understanding how slackware works to begin with and then using a VERY sliced up version of it.

slackware is a unique beast with a unique dep tree that new users tend not to understand.

Yes, that X11 update is a problem. IIRC there was 9 or 10 "lib" updates associated with the main X11 file. Unfortunately the listing put the main X11 update first... when it needed to be last.

Separately, there is also the "expat2.2.0" update that MUST have the old version removed (both the old and the update files are present after the update). If Puppy gets shut down, or rebooted... the black screen of death. I found this out by mistake when quickly doing a remaster of slacko5.7 that had stopped printing. Total nada, no way out except power button. Then redo-from-start.

I sent a PM to 01micko, the developer of Slacko, about this update problem.

He should be offering a solution in the respective Slacko topics.
