[SOLVED] Tahrpup 6.0.6 will not mount usb flash drives

#1 Post by CGP »

Tahrpup x64 6.0.6 will not mount usb flash drives. When I plug one in, it does not display on the desktop. When I clip on the 'mount' icon, and then click on 'refresh', it is not displayed on the desktop or in the 'mount' window.

Please, what is wrong?

64 bit Tahrpup 6.0.6. Frugal install, that is I am using a tahr64save file. Do you want the entire dmesg output, or should I grep it somehow?

yes !
Only the lines about plugging.

The last lines of output in console.

You can have it to text file:

Code: Select all

dmesg > output_messages.txt

I ran dmesg right after plugging in a USB flash drive, as you asked. The output file is 45K. How do I post the output here? I do not know how much of it to post. I tried to post part of the output as a txt file, but the forum will not allow me to post txt files.

Just the end of the messages, at the bottom of the file.

Latest messages can be found at the bottom of the file.

Need just the messages about usb plugging.

Maximum the last 20 lines maybe...

Simply copy here between Code BBCode tags.

This could be a problem:

Code: Select all

sdb: unknown partition table
What partition you have ? Is it works under other operation system?

I have 3 partitions:
1) 100 GB NTFS partition encrypted by TrueCrypt
2) 320 GB NTFS partition unencrypted
3) 50 GB FAT32 partition unencrypted

The tahr64save file and many other pup_save files are in the FAT32 partition.

I should say that I also have Tahrpup 6.0.5 PAE on the FAT32 partition. It is working and has no problems with mounting USB flash drives. Today I just installed Tahrpup x64 6.0.6 and it has not yet found any USB flash drives. Also Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 has worked fine on the same computer with the same partitions.

First off, a cool way to grab the dmesg output of the most recently plugged USB flash is:

Code: Select all

dmesg | tac | grep "new high-speed USB" -B 25 -m1 | tac > dmesg.out
The "dmesg.out" file will contain just the info about that USB flash.

That said, it does indeed look like the "JetFlash Transcend 16GB" isn't recognizable to the mounter. I would plug it in and look at it using GParted. GParted will show the partitioning information of the flash drive.

It would also help to know what you expected to find on the flash drive.

I'm back.

I found the problems. jafadmin's suggestion was good. I booted to Tahrpup 6.0.5, which has no problem mounting the flash drives. I ran GPartEd on the flash drives that Tahrpup x64 6.0.6 would not detect. There were 2 such flash drives. GPartEd displayed their file systems with no problem, but also displayed yellow exclamation marks. So, I deleted their partitions, created new ones, and formated the 2 flash drives. Now Tahrpup x64 6.0.6 finds and mounts both!

I have about 10 USB flash drives. Before posting my problem here, I tested 2 of them on Tahrpup x64 6.0.6 and both were not detected. It turns out that of the 10 only those 2 were not detected! What a coincidence. Sorry to bother you.

But we did learn that Tahrpup x64 6.0.6 does not detect some slightly damaged USB flash drive file systems that Tahrpup 6.0.5 PAE and Windows 10 x64 do detect and mount.

---

For your information, I ran the command suggested by jafadmin. Here is the entire result:

Code: Select all

usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 2 using ehci-pci
usb-storage 1-3:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
scsi3 : usb-storage 1-3:1.0

scsi 3:0:0:0: Direct-Access JetFlash Transcend 16GB 1100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 6
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] 30851072 512-byte logical blocks: (15.7 GB/14.7 GiB)
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 43 00 00 00
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA
 sdb: unknown partition table
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
usb 1-3: USB disconnect, device number 2
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Synchronizing SCSI cache
sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb]
Result: hostbyte=DID_NO_CONNECT driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
Thanks for the help! Everything is working now.
