How to build a completely custom puppy linux distro?!

#1 Post by laslo_one »

Hey guys, i've been wondering, is there a complete guide or how-to for building a completely custom puppy linux?
I've been searching high and low for a guide among threads of this forum, though i found only pieces of
useful information. Let's say, i want a debian based disro with icewm, spacefm, rxvt-unicode and chromium as a browser. What should i do to compile such a system? Currently i'm running Arch Linux.
Sorry for any mistakes, because english isn't my mothertongue

Welcome to Puppyland, laslo_one!
If you come from Arch, you should find Puppy easy.

Puppy is built with woof, now woof CE (Community Edition).
You can find it on github.
There is also this starting point for it on this forum:
woof-CE needs you

Maybe this info will help you.
https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE
This is the Woof-CE on Github.
Read down the web page to see the info you are asking about.
Read carefully and follow all the steps.

Do not post questions at Github about using Woof -CE.
But you can post questions at the forum topic on Woof -CE.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Hello laslo_one.

Welcome aboard!

If I may --

Do not use the branch of woof-CE labeled "woof-Legacy", however. A few years
ago it was current. It is still very good for learning, IMO, because it will build an
incomplete, non-working, Puppy, and you will have to fill in the gaps. This "Legacy"
branch is kept for reference.

It may be a better idea to use the woof branch that has the latest changes in the
date column at the right.

On the other hand, should you wish to have a recent, already-made Pup based on
Debian, may I recommend DPupBuster by josejp2424, one of our most talented and
experienced developers. Here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dpup/f ... 9-uefi.iso

As with any Puppy, you can remaster it ( adapt it to your needs ) using
various tools, or very simply, by adding in your pupsave file -- once created --
the tools you mention in your opening post,

As you can see, Puppy is a very versatile system.

IHTH.

As an alternative, less daunting than mastering Woof, you may want to consider a customized debiandog using fredx181's build-kit. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 752#962752 The debiandogs are not Puppies. They are true debian operating systems configured to function 'like Puppies': frugal installs, using SaveFolders and able to create and use Squashfilesystems which can be 'merged in ram' rather than installed, among other "Puppy-like" features. But, as true debian systems, both apt-get and synaptic are available to access debian repositories for the purpose of adding your own choice of applications.

Additional instructions for building applications can be found on this thread, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=112784
