I do most of my work in console mode, using framebuffer console (modprobe fbcon in /etc/rc.d/rc.local).
The mode is set by grub4dos in menu.list with vga=
2006 HP DV5000, with Intel 945GM video chip, medium wide screen, in wary or racy grub4dos does not
accept vga= settings (788 or 791 for 800x600 or 1024x768 16-bit, or 0x314 or 0x317 or 0x331 widescreen)
but says these modes are not available. I can choose from the offered list 314 or 317 and it works.
This is a time-wasting nuisance.
fbcon also does not install. (lsmod)
How do I set menu.list for grub4dos to go straight to framebuffer console or equivalent?
On 2004 laptops with 855GM chipset vga=0x317 does work where vga=791 does not (wary, racy).
The difference has to do with VESA vs KERNEL modes, I read.
vga=791 works fine on a 2004 DELL 600M and elsewhere with racy and wary and other puppies.
I read that the chip uses (used) Intel 915 driver.
Trying to replace a 2007 DV6500 with screwy nvidia chip that won't work in Puppies 6+.
The 6500 finished dying recently.
Framebuffer console works well here in Tahr and Lupu.
Tahr with b43 wifi insists on encryption.
Lupu cannot be upgraded to run Pale Moon 28.
how to set video modes framebuffer console intel 945GM?
vga=0x0317 for framebuffer console on HP dv5000 with 945GM
I was missing a 0. vga=0x0314 800x600 or vga=0x0317 1024x768.
0x0317 only sometimes works
Not the best linux laptop.
0x0317 for 1024x768
Not exactly. vga=0x0317 boots to 1024x768 pixel framebuffer console.
If I then start x (xwin) and switch back to console, it is plain VGA 640x480 again.
Racy refuses to print with my brother MFC7820N. Precise does print so I will use that.
Precise also boots to framebuffer console or something equivalent.
On 2004 laptops with Intel integrated video 855GM, 0x0317 produces a stable framebuffer console.
Lupu and Tahr video are scrambled there but work on the 945GM video of my dv5000.
It is good to have choices for older hardware. Tahr will not connect with b43 wifi on this laptop but does on another
laptops. Racy will not boot at all on that other laptop (which won't print at all).

framebuffer video reverts to 640x480 also with 855GM video
ASUS M5000 from 2004 boots to 1024x768 with vga=0x0317 but if I start with no X then load X the vts revert to 640x480
(on the widescreen dv5000 with large margins right and left). On most laptops vga=791 produces stable framebuffer console.
