Overall, I like Puppy Linux because it's easy to use, quick and easy to install, reliable, stable, and fast. As a live CD, it's great for rescuing a computer with a
malfunctioning OS.

However, I'm having trouble with the CD burning operations. Mounting the CD burner and then getting it to work are both hit-or-miss propositions. Also, I haven't found anything on how to get the scanner to work, and there are no scanner functions in the menus or wizards.

Thus, while Puppy Linux is useful to me, I can't rely on it exclusively.

I have tried out Damn Small Linux. I'll explore it much further. (I like Puppy's desktop better.)

What other distributions should I try?

The problems you describe are more like HW issues rather than distro-related. Change your burner! Samsung offers a DVD-RAM at mailorder prices you won't believe. Knoppix is generally regarded as the yardstick by which all others are judged. You might like Austrumi's latest offering if you use standard clone parts.

Sorry, Bruce! Only just noticed that you are helping this guy with his burner problems. It's really confusing when folks cast around like this, multiple posting in different sections, without following through on your excellent advice. Now he wants to change his OS!!!

There's been a bundle of issues with these badged CD burners, especially from Creative (no.1 bad boy!) and HP. It always makes sense to buy devices with badges from recognised manufactures (Samsung, Sony, etc) or out-and-out clones with ridiculous names, even no names, but often oversupply/overcapacity products coming from brand new, top quality Chinese factories. The others like Creative, Iomega, HP, etc are just trying to make a fast buck on the back of their badge, normally associated with their usual peripherals.

I sure have but i am a poor tester.
Swift is almost 100% identical to AntiX
and you will get that confirmed by searching
at the http://antix.freeforums.org/

but I think the latest version maybe changed to Debian
or something else. I am too lazy to read up on it now.

Why not make a frugal install of both antix and swift and compare them
and report back here what you think?

Latest AntiX is most likely superior to Swift
The two develpers of AntiX spent many years
to give it features that is rather unique. And it allows
us to save on NTFS which very few debian varieties do.

Maybe some of you got tired of the Unity feature in Ubuntu
and want to see something more familiar?

Luninux OS maybe will suite you. Look on DistroWatch.
They have a download now that is fairly fast so why not give it a try.

I did a cheat boot using the iso boot on grub4dos but used the simplified
boot code that I have told about earlier in the forum.

In case somebody is brave enough I can tell it again. I am booted
in Luninux OS now so I don't want to mess up things by going into
programs that are entirely new to me and get lost

Anyway it looks cool and have all the bells and whistles that one xpct.

It wasn't obvious swift could be installed frugally. My harddrives a bit fullat the mo, but will try later ; -)

I have not tested with latest Swift. AFAIK he made a new one
or planned to make a new one so that one maybe is different
from AntiX where the latest version can be booted frugally.
