One of my favourite films is 'Brazil' from Terry Gilliam

My roommates from last year conned me into watching Shooter. It was after we got back from Six Flags (a local amusement park) at around 00:30 or so. They invited me to watch it with them, but I said "no, I need to go to sleep". Then they played dirty. They bribed me with cookies and said I should at least hang out for a little. So I said, "Sure, I'll stay for a bit". Ate some cookies, played some Super Nintendo with them, chit chatted, and started getting ready to leave. But then they put in another batch of cookies.... While waiting for them to finish, they went ahead and started the movie. Well, by the time the cookies were ready I was hooked (to the movie, I've been hooked on cookies since I had enough teeth to eat one).
It was a pretty good movie though. Plus, there was an extra element of humor because before the movie, we were discussing what to be for Halloween, and the topic of "I'm the Juggernaut, .....!" came up. Well, most people in Shooter must not have known who he was....

watched it twice myself (never watch a film less than 2 times). for similar reasons you might also enjoy LuckySleven, Man on Fire, The Protector, LORTT, MI3 and others. always great to see a script where someone beats the odds. spiderman has that format (no disrespect to the other marvel comics on the list), with a bit of make believe applied.Bruce B wrote:I enjoyed The Shooter, watched it 3x
Maybe I liked it because I enjoy seeing Justice really happen
here is my "recently viewed [major releases]" list:

One of the strangest film experiences for me was another Terry Gillam film
'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'
The first time I watched it, after about 10-15 minutes . . . Enough!
Self indulgent, boring etc. I stopped watching. Very rare for me.
So after several months I tried again and this time maybe watched 30-40 minutes but it was hard going and I stopped. Again did not enjoy or find any merit in continuing . . .
Then I heard from a friend that this is a common reaction and only the third viewing can be enjoyed. Wot?
I recently watched it for the third time after a break of two or three years.
I hoped to buck the trend. I watched it all the way through and really enjoyed it.
Very weird reaction.
Here is a list of films to explore

If you have not seen it I would recommend 'Chocolat'
- changing the world through chocolate
(it is a plan!)

I liked Chocolat, and another French movie I liked recently was "A Good Year" (set in France anyway).
Just got done watching "The Professional" again, really liked, and had a nice song by Sting at the end, "The Shape of My Heart".
"Fear and Loathing", well, haven't seen it, but Hunter Thompson was one of the stranger characters in America back in the '60's and '70's. I have the book, haven't gotten into it in ages. I went to see him talk in the '80's, he arrived about 2 hours late, stoned and incoherent. That was fun!
Never really figured out "Brazil".
The Cohen Brothers are my favorite directors these days. Just got done watching their "True Grit", quite an improvement on the original John Wayne movie which was also good.
I liked "Shooter", but the books by Stephen Hunter are even better (except that silly Samurai one). Great for gun nuts because he's an author who really knows guns.

I read the book in the 80's. It...um...held my attention very well.Lobster wrote:One of the strangest film experiences for me was another Terry Gillam film

Call me a dreamer if you want, but I much enjoyed watching "A Beaufiful Green", a French movie by Coline Serreau. (1996) "La belle Verte" is the original French title.
The nice thing is it can be watched in Youtube in 9 parts:

I liked La belle Verte too. It reminds me of books about Anastasia by Vladimir Megre.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is one of the funniest movies I ever seen - it reminds me of two of my friends
Brazil, like 1984 and V for Vendetta, is great futuristic movie and very realistic for what is happening on the world this days.
Some of mine favorite movies are: Road home, Koyaanisqatsi and Rashômon.

We have movies thread? Niiice
@Lobster I watched Brazil and I also like it
Others have mentioned some good films too
@PaulBx1
I think everyone watched Professional like multiple times and everyone likes it AFAIK
I also like Cohen Brothers films
@bignono1 If you like Nicolas Cage, this is very good movie - remake directed by Werner Hertzog which is excellent director I especially like his documentaries
Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World
@mickee I watched cube long ago and I remember I liked it the first time I watched it, it's not in my "best" movies list though.
Now, my reccomendations I do watch a lot of movies and many different genres
Pan's Labyrinth (2006) If I had a top list it would be near the top
Ink (2009) Independent production film that amazed me. It's dramma in the core but told with fantasy/action twist, very creative
Spirited Away (2001) - Lately I've been watching some animes, this is very well drawn and has a fantastic imagination. Best of Japanese animation.
City of God (2002) A good dramma happening in Brazil ghetto
There are many more movies that I like.

I will keep a look out for your favs guys . . .
Coen Brothers have made some great movies.
Pans Labyrinth I found very hard. Cruelty is not pleasant to watch.
You might like 'Fish Tank' and 'Sin City'
or for a totally perplexing character, try 'Bronson'
Somewhere in between maybe - try 'Pleasantville' which stars Spiderman
(the actor not the comic book hero)
Want something unexpected?
try 'Dawn to Dusk' from Tarantino
How about a mainstream Chinese comedy?
'Kung Fu Hustle' - made me laugh
or a watchable musical
'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' (Coen Brothers) Wonderful film
There is a Chinese film about a woman who works very hard
making noodles to buy a colour TV - anyone know the name. I would like to watch again
- ah (Google is my fiend - eh friend) 'Ermo'
Thanks guys

To answer to OP:
IMHO, The best, recent (ish) films include: Inception, Shutter Island, Toy Story 3, Despicable Me, Machete, others..
....I worked at a Cinema, still see films for free there.. so I see a lot.
Don't like most, I am a bit fussy.
But I am not one of the 'film society' wannabe critic types..
I enjoy silly films and funny films most, more than depressing foreign nonsense. Having said that I've seen so many amazing, unknown foreign films at these bloody film society things, I just wish I could remember their names!
Anyway, I agree with the following:
- City of God is great, Bad Lieutenant was quite good.
- Spirited Away & Kung Fu Hustle (love it!)
- Pans Labrynth and Sin City (really great)
- Cohen Brothers - especially 'The Big Lebowski' and 'O Brother'
- Fear & Loathing is an old classic, watched it a few times with mates
I also love, in no particular order, and for random reasons:
- "The Moon", one guy on the moon, on his own, whole film. Best Sci Fi for years, without doubt.
- Funny, relaxing re-watchable comedies, such as: Dodgeball, Toy Story, How to Train your Dragon, Naked Gun, The Benchwarmers, Anchorman, Blades of Glory, many others
- "The Prestige", about 2 magicians competing for it all in 19th Century London
- Classic Hong Kong action movies, (mostly with Jackie Chan) such as Police Story, Rumble in the Bronyx, but there are others...
- Also Ong Bak and Tom Yung goon - Thai martial arts action comedies
- Documentaries like Zeitgeist, Home (gorgeous), Food Inc, plus lot of political, scientific and financial stuff... Minus all the conspiracy crap that you gotta go through to find the gems
- Cheesy 80's Sci Fi/Action classics, like: 'Blade Runner', 'Total Recall' and also 'The Predator', 'The Running Man'
- Japanese films like Suicide Circle/Suicide Club, Battle Royale, Oldboy, etc
- Also Korean cinema is generally good, not as weird as Japanese, seen some great Korean detective serial-killer thriller things
- Perfume: Story of a Murderer - great film
- Many of Ghiblis animated beauties: Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, etc
- I love Pulp Fiction, I also quite like Inglorious Bastards, Dusk Till Dawn (the 1st one only), Kill Bill (but not so much),
- The Long Good Friday - bob hoskins gangster classic, soooo much better than the Guy Ritchie sh*te, also "Mean Streets", "C-asino", a few others..
- Cave of the Yellow Dog, Ten Canoes, other calm foreign weirdy films (makes me smile),
- random "Troma" films. "Toxic Avenger", anyone?
- Vipco Horrors, cult gore/horrors, etc..
- Oh, and Harry Potter... Can't wait for the next one!
So many great films that I can't remember right now, though!
Doh!
