Dosbox 0.63 - for running Windows programs

#1 Post by MU »

You can run it from the Dotpup-menue.

C:\ is /usr/local/dosbox0.63/c-drive

Start dosbox, type
type README|more

You will need LibSDL and LibGL in addition:

LibSDL:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/LibSDL1.2-forDoom.pup
LibGL (NOT in Puppy 2.10 or newer, use Pupget!):
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/DRI/OpenGL-B.pup

Here is an image, System Shock, one of the first 3D-Actionadventures from 1992.

In this high resolution (640x480) it is too slow on my machine (Celeron 2200, SIS650 Graficscard), but you can play it in lower resolution, and set Dosbox to "interpolation".

I also tried Dosbox 0.61(the Fedora RPM), but it does not run with my graficscard ("missing GLX").
If you have a Graficscard that supports the xorg-GLX-Extension, it might be worth a try.

You can create it from inside dosbox, it is explained somewhere in the README.

If I remember well:
config -writeconf dosbox.conf

This will create a standard-config, you can alter in a texteditor.

I've got DOSBox running now. :D

It doesn't take long for Ken's Labrynth to crash it.

I'm downloading Wolfenstein 3D now to try it out.

Especially with games it might be worth a try to test older releases.
There seem to be significant changes in each release.
Someone posted, System Shock worked with 0.61 for him, but not with 0.63.

w3D might work, it is quite old.

There also is a GL-Port for Linux:
http://wolfgl.sourceforge.net/

Also found this one, but don't know if it works: http://icculus.org/wolf3d/

Wolfenstein 3D works pretty well.

I don't know why Ken's Labrynth crashes it though. It's about the same age as Wolfenstein 3D I think.

Check out http://www.dosgames.com if some of you don't have any DOS games to try out in it.

I have to say DosBox is a heck of a lot easier to set up than DosEMU...at least with that dotpup anyway

I downloaded and installed the dotpup. The installation went okay, and then menu button appeared where it was supposed to. However, when I click on it nothing happens. I've tried running it from the Xrun command line, still nothing.

Pentium II MMX 200 64MB ram
Maximum Millenium II video card.

Do I need to download and install both dotpups?

Trobin,

No, just the german or english one.

Plus this one too:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/download.php?id=912

It is the SDL-library needed for grafics and sound.
If a program does not work, it is always the best, to start it in a rxvt (command-window).

Then you can see any errors it reports.
Often it is just a missing lib.

Does it work now?

Unfortunately no.

I installed the libSDL file but nothing was changed. I did try running it through ROX but nothing happened. The square, which I take to mean that puppy recognizes the muse click and is ready to launch a program, if formed around the icon but nothing happens after that.

Yes, as i said:
run it in rxvt to get the error-messages.
In rox you can right-click after navigating to the dosbox-folder, and then select "xterm here".
Then type
./run-dosbox

Now you should see an error-message, please post it here.
You can select it with the mouse, and paste it to a message by clicking with the middle mousebutton in the message.

Oh, I see.

Try this Dotpup ( libGL.so.1 ):
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/download.php?id=493

I took the Dosbox-binary from a Fedora-Linux-RPM, and did not compile it on Puppy.

If it does not work with that OpenGL-Dotpup, I might try tomorrow to compile it myself with OpenGL disabled.
In that case you will have to wait until tomorrow, or have to install the X.org-Xserver, that includes several OpenGl-stuff:
http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=2303

-----------*edit
How did you get it working?

Essentially the way you said to do it. I searched the forums for the lib file, and found the dotpup for it.

Again thanks for your help.
