Quality of TV with Pentium 700Mhz

#1 Post by sml »

If I install a TV card in an old Pentium 700Mhz and use a lightweight distro like Puppy, will the performance be sufficient to run the TV with good quality?

Your question cannot be answered accurately until you supply more details: analogue or digital tuner? If digital, standard-definition or high-definition?

Guess I am just thinking more generally at this stage and considering the following options:

a) old Pentium, Puppy & TV Card. Definately digital - either SD or HD? Hopefully HD if it can handle HD?

b) Digital Set-Top Box to use with an LCD monitor

c) just buying a LCD TV

If a 700MHz Puppy can run a TV card well, then I might go for the option with the greatest flexibility .. which is option (a)!!

With Pentium3-700:
Standard-definition digital - yes (same MPEG2 codec & resolution as DVD).
High-definition digital - no ... unless you have a graphics card which will support XvMC video output.

See "MPlayer 1.0rc1 + XvMC Nov 2006"
under "Regarding XvMC"
