Ps you mentioned your usb isn't working, I never heard of that before other than 4.0 dingo new kernel or are you talking about booting via USB?
Not booting. The puppy doesn't detect it. I read on forum and old toshiba laptops have these troubles. I will try to find solution for manually detect it.

for a 200 mhz cpu environment, some swap space and using an older Puppy linux 1.08rl should work speedily.

After testing many distributions i decided to use 3.01 and stick with it.

I will try to make the best of it with strip down.

And ttuuxxx said he will try to. I hope with 3.01 distro.

Good night for now. I didn't realise how late it is. ;)

I tried fat free. It's faster but don't have RTF text editor. I don't know if it has printer drivers. I decided i don't need printer drivers.

Video suport was striped to? Or am i wrong. That's cool.

I don't know what i'll do. I will use 3.01 official. And with time strip down everything i don't need. I hope it will be fast enought in time.

I decided i don't need Xorg too. Just Xvesa.

Ok i see you are trying. Thanx. First health than everything else! Thats my moto! :)

So if these helps:

-version 3.01 works the best on my laptop. Everything eith CF flash works as it should. (all other have troubles with CF card. Version 2.17.1 works but if i save session direct on CF then it does not boot anymore) In 3.01 everything works.

-Printer support - i don't need any
-Video player and codecs - i don't need any
-If Xorg support for monitor takes much of resurrces and space i don't need it. I don't use it anyway. I use Xvesa.
-Everything that has to do with WRITING on cd-rom i don't need. Only to read.
-Everything that has to do with writing and reading on DVD rom or Blueray i don't need.
-dial-up supports i don't need.
...

What i need:
-RTF Text editor with basic functions.
-simple MSN client
-simple mail/pop email client
-simpe brovser like Dilo
...

Other things i will install with petget if i need as i work.

I did some aditional testing today and decided to give DSL another try. I comed to conclusion puppy yust won't run nicely on my old machine. And i don't have enought knowladge to make it run faster.

I like puppy more but ... If i had at least 500mhz laptop with 256 mb ram no doubt i would use puppy. But... It yust dont work fast enoguht to work with ease.

@ttuuxxx i will se if u will be able to lighten puppy "to fly" on my old laptop. If u manage that it would be cool.

Well see. I am doing testing on DSL now and trying to put it on CF.

Ok i tested DSL to see what to expect. Basicaly it runs preaty well BUT installing anything a bit biger like yust abiword or something like that is still way to slow for normal use. :(

Too bad. I guess old laptop aren't meant to be anymore...

I'm putting it all together right now, last chance do you really want a email client? Sylpheed is 5mb packaged and 14MB extracted and installed.? Thats about the smallest email client, Kind of overkill, I never use email clients just www.gmail.com well tell me what you think. ASAP

Hey ttuuxxx

don't forget to include the swap file, as I don't believe he's partitioned

and without extra ram he seems to be living with very high expectations

maybe this would be better?

How do you include a swap file??
Partition a swap drive yes? but he has to do it with gparted. Like a 512MB Partition swap would be handy.

I dont know. Then don't put in email client.

I tought these 4 things i could have on my old laptop with linux installed on CF card:

-RTF text editor
-MSN client
-Email support
-Web support

But guess not. :)

I know how to make swap. So don't include it in if it can be included. There is a reason why i don't use swap. CF card. And I do know how to make swap.

If linux with GUI that has a RTF editor and MSN client and a simple browser like Dillo (that honestly is wery hard to use) won't work without swap on CF card then belive me i wont be using nothing.

Beacose there would be no point to it.

So if these 4 (now 3 things -RTF editor, msn client, simpy web support) are to high expetations to work belive me i will not be using enything.

I still can buy typewriter then!

I really don't understand how some linux distributions are stating they work on 8 mb ram. That is now i see cleary bulshit.

I don't find firewal, linux router or printer server an OS. But a FIRMWARE!

Hello

First thing don't get upset I've spent around 30+hrs trying to make you happy.
You will have amsn messenger client
Siag office for you rtf editor
Dillo is not included, Netsurf is, which is way better of a small browser, I included the latest version
I have an older version of Claws mail (10MB installed) which I can add, its a bit smaller. But will work just fine.
I've been working on the look and feel and its starting to really take shape.
I'll help you install the swap when we get to that point and it should run real nice, how big is your cf card?
But just show some patience please. Thanks for your time.

@ttuuxxx/ledo

I wasn't thinking of the swap partition, though this is still possible

Ignoring the early discussion about using windoze swapspace, see this thread, particularly bluedogruns posts

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 6&start=15

and muggins follow up

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=21977

I believe BruceB has also talked about swap files as opposed to partition

what about onebone/barebones/meanpup? they are well suited to this lappy

I ran 2.14 on an IBM P2/223mhz/64mb, it was ok for everything except watching videos

I still say best is ram upgrade for that lappy or, shock horror, why stick with that one - better lappys available for £50/$100?

@ledo, you can't expect it to be a flyer on those specs, it would only just run w98, and was much happier on 95 or 3.11!

@ttuuxxx belive me i don't get upset over you.

I got upset beacose i tried:

-DSL linux
-Puppy linux
-Slitaz

A lot of puplets...

And none gave the resoult i was after. I got upset beacose there are a lot of debates over the internet how linux can be used to spice up the old hardware. I evan got and bought CF card and IDE adapter. Beacose i tought look old laptop - What to do with it?

Then i started to instal these so caled "old hardware" linux distros and burnd about 20 CD an played arround.

And then i realised that these distros refers to "old hardvare" as systems that has at least 256 ram and and leats say 500 Mhz cpu.

But on these i will say "ancient" hardware NONE works. Sure they boot but what can a noob do with command line? GUI is usless its too slow. Or evan if i master the command line what would i gain? I like to browse internet talk on msn and write RTF text. I don't care about else.

Belive me i realy don't bitch about you. You said you would help and you spend your personal time helping somebody that is bitching around linux. :D

That is "noble" at least and a lot more.

I yust tought linux "for old hardware" will work fast for basic things. But it soure doesn't. You may kill me for saying that but its the trouth.

U have experiance and decided to help me and still will use a few day of your personal time to help me. How can then a noob do enything? It can't. And that a shame.
