Can Puppy boot from DVD-RAM?

#1 Post by Nick2008 »

I am planning to try out puppylinux soon... but can it boot from DVD-RAM, and work fine with DVD-RAM? This is the only disc I have. It is single-layer, 4.7GB, rewritable, 2~3x speed. UDF.

EDIT: Just found the correct forum for this question... I think, sorry if this is the wrong section.

I have been using DVD-RAM for any distro I tried during the last months- Puppy works well, too, boots from and saves without any problem to this kind of rewritable disk
- of course DVD-RAM must be supported by your DVD-writer

In XP it can read DVD-RAM, but cannot write to it.

Remember, this is in UDF format.

In additional software, not long ago, you will see a thread on UDF.
When looking with the puppysearch link in my sig, you'll find more.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

So my DVD-RAM disc is in UDF... it should work I believe. Correct?

And a CD-R in UDF format should also work?

You didn't read the material on UDF, otherwise you would know how about in Puppy.

Considering you made posts regarding udftools and other UDF-related subjects, you should know the answer without sending me looking at posts. From what I have seen udftools may be required, but considering people had problems, I don't believe it will work smoothly. Just making a small explanation is all it takes.

By reading material you learn and get wiser.
Not the case when just the answer is given.

Unfortunately I can not find a solid answer regarding this.

Remember, I am trying to make a LiveDVD with a DVD-RAM in UDF format.

As you have seen in the post, nobody was successful due to UDF.

Ok, so my new question arises: Is there anyway I can change the format of the DVD-RAM from UDF to FAT?

if your DVD-Writer supports DVD-RAM do not worry about UDF etc.
Do the following:
1. download puppy.iso
2. get the puppy.iso on the DVD-RAM using konsole with command
dd if=puppy.iso of=/dev/sr0 (if this is your DVD-RAM writer
3.Boot from this DVD-RAM- should work without any problem. When shutting down puppy, you will be asked whether to save the changes to CD/DVD: choose this option and the changes will be written to the DVD and read from it upon reboot.

IMPORTANT: as I told you in my previous post: your writer must support DVD-RAM-writing. Reading from DVD-RAM is also possible from devices which are not able to write to this kind of rewritable disk.
