What is Woof?
In BarryK's blog I noticed some talk about a new project called Woof. It also seems to involve Python. Is this a new Puppy Linux with Python instead of shell scripting in it, like Pardus Linux? If so, I would like to be involved.
post in the blog
I guess to be involved, start posting in Barry's blog. Woof is Barry's new pet, perhaps too young to get a picture of.

On the left side of my blog, at http://puppylinux.com/blog, you can see "Categories" -- click on "Woof" to see all the Woof-related posts, which also outlines what Woof is going to be -- though it's a moving-goal-posts thing.
Note, I'm not idle, the "magical" script that will build Woof by downloading Ubuntu (and PET) packages is taking shape. Really heavy automatic pruning of the packages, and the final product is likely to be badly broken, at first.

Sound exciting, although I was hoping for something like Pardus Linux. I'll be keepking tabs on Woof through your blog."Woof"
Oh yeah, I had better explain that. Having relinquished leadership of the Puppy project (well, still in the process of doing so), I wanted to go off and play with some new ideas. No particular goals, just play day by day, and as much or as little as I feel like. One of the ideas is a new distro, Puppy-like in usability but without any of its own packages -- instead, it is created by a magic script that downloads and pulls apart binary packages from some other distro. I have codenamed this new project "Woof", and the previous two blog posts are in the new "Woof" category -- I'm exploring the possibility of using Ubuntu packages for Woof, and I am downloading them all while I am in Perth with fast Internet access -- but the proposed magic Woof build script would of course only have to download what is chosen to be in the distro (and devx sfs).
BTW aren't you afraid that if you're totally dependent on another distro's packages that Woof will simply be seen as a derivative of that distro? In http://akaimbatman.blogspot.com/2005/06 ... 90449.html this article there's a suggestion how software in Linux should be installed, i.e. just like on Apple, which I found a good idea.
Hi Barry and all,
It is hard not to get excited about the possibilities Woof is promising.
But I have a question: will Woof be "English-only", just like Puppy? Or will the cross-pollination with Ubuntu at last solve the localization problem?
Simply put: will Woof, just like Ubuntu, be able to download and install packages ( and eventually parts of itself..?) in a user-chosen language?
Thanks!

I am planning for Woof to be more international. Current builds are English only, but the build scripts separate out all the international language files from the packages and I plan for a choice which language(s) you want put into the live-CD and those will be brought back in.
The scripts and menu are still English only.

hmm... if you release woof with the sources, it might be possible to build a version of puppy for alternate architectures like POWER, MIPS, ARM, and others.
In the place of flash we could use swf_dec. i've used it before, and it's good for many flash based services, and if it's cross platform, we could bring puppy to audiences it could never reach.
but currently the direction woof is going is quite good, would you agree Barry?
Well, I'll be getting back to researching ways to use puppy in ways never imagined. like for datacenters (I imagine you might have thought about that a few times .
