new software - not packaged yet

#1 Post by MU »

The idea of this thread is to announce new software versions, that have not been packaged yet.
This might help, to quickly find someone, who will package it.

Please post links where it may be gotten, optionally a short description.

Wine 1.1.14:
http://www.winehq.org/

Ati Catalyst 9.1 proprietary graficsdrivers with OpenGL 3 support:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linu ... adeon.html
Announcement in german:
http://www.pro-linux.de/news/2009/13745.html
Some comments there indicate, that it may run less stable than earlier releases (might depend on the chip you use)

Well I picked the first one on the list, Wine, and compiled the latest for series 4.0, here's some notes about it
- I didn't compile it with OpenGl support because its a pain for most to get going on series 4.0, Plus I just wanted it to work nice and easy.
- I never used wine, or will I ever, I basically want to break away from windows, Thou the idea has crossed my mind to make a stripped down to the bones version of puppy and just use 100% of windows freeware applications, browser, media player, ftp, games, calculator, notepad ++, etc that would be cool.
- next to get this package the menu item isn't in correct and probably would have to be change, there was a few bins that came with it, so I click them all and a file manager opened with c: directories, so I guess it was working, I'm not supporting this release because I know nothing at all about it, so have fun, the bin's start wine are located at usr/bin/ and they all start with 'w'

It means that you have to get the installation and distribution files from his server and not host them elsewhere

Once a pet is created we might get him to host them - cool!

I tried the Ati drivers 9.1.
In wows puplet or newyearspup, they require a recompiled kernel with the option:

Code: Select all

#
# Bus options (PCI etc.)
#
CONFIG_PCI_MSI=y
Then it loaded, but I had one hard crash, and had to run e2fsck -p on my savefile to be able to use it.

Good: videos then work in compiz, and everything seems to be more snappy.
But at moment, that is not enough for me, to break kernel compatibility with wow, so it will come in a later newyearspup in 2-3 months.
I also hoped, that OpenGL3 with the GLSL shader language now allows to use pixelbuffers in wine. I think the missing support is the reason, that Bioshock displays a black screen.
So I compiled Wine with glATI.h and glxATI.h included from gl.h and glx.h.
This required some small changes in the typedefs, but compiled then.
I could see no change in the black screen, though.
I think, wine itself must be enhanced, to make use of those new features of the driver.
So currently no pets from me.

I really enjoy your focus in repacking packages as small as possible. It will sure give Puppy room for more goodies.
I am surprised by the result you get. - Positive surprised :D

I have compiled wine 1.1.14 will post soon in 2 versions

a smaller .pet for just running programs with default puppy (no compiler etc...)

and an sfs that includes the full development environment, documentation and support for some additional libraries (jack, ldap, esound, GLU...) <--this one may take me a bit longer since I can't seem to find DEV versions for a lot of these pets
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

Great idea ttuuxxx! Think this has been discussed before, but AFAIK it has never been done.

Freeware yes, but there's lots of open source as well:

http://osswin.sourceforge.net/
http://www.opensourcewindows.org/
http://www.opensourcelist.org/oss/sugge ... tions.html

Also, it would offer an easy way for non-English people to enjoy Puppy with their favourite applications easily installed in their native language...

The one I posted has them, I didn't remove any of the functionality. Just compiling extras and stripped what I could.

here is the Wine version I compiled for tests.
I have not tried it in another Puppy, just on my patched newyearspup.
So maybe it will not work on your system.
Compiled without fontconfig, and with patched GL.

It also includes a memory patch required by some games, but I did not check that either, because I must reboot with my Nvidia card for that.
The patch is described hre:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14657

Download (14 MB):
http://dotpups.de/tests/wine-1.1.14-i48 ... kpatch.pet

**edit**: works in the standard newyearspup, also with Nvidia drivers. It fixes the crash of the second level of Bioshock (but that games runs unstable in general, I had to restart it several times).

@ttuuxxx
I compiled with support for a lot of extra programs like GL, GLU, Xcomposite, JACK, esound. LDAP. If you do new2dir make install-lib with wine it will automatically do a minimal install. I went back and added some extras to the package after a standard new2dir make install as well as MIME types and desktop files ... then made a full sfs with all DEV, DOC etc... OH yeah and added winetricks to all of them... I downloaded your package earlier and it was missing the /usr/bin/ directory completely... haven't tried to redownload it yet

anyhow it is all posted here along with the pets for all the "extras"

Well HarryWill I don't know anything about wine, I just made the package to give others a head start on it, if they wanted to use my package they can, I've seen other veryyyyy long threads about it and I just don't have the time to commit myself to another large task, I have tons of threads That I support on here, plus lots of Projects. For now Its 4.2 is where most of my time will be spent. Not to offend anyone, but when I said I guess it works is because, It compiled without error and did launch from /usr/bin.

Totally not the case,.. it is frustrating. It seems like almost everything I work on (sometimes for hours/days) I find out you have already posted it somewhere usually better and smaller and all of my work is wasted. I did redownload your wine pet and all is there now - something must have happened during pet2tgz. I would not waste your time intentionally.

Thanks :)
I edited my post, so its not so harsh, Its just that when you asked about FirePup and GPL it was a real pain to get it all together, Its the only time I had to do something like that, and then this post about missing items, It just seamed like you had it in for me. But I guess its not the case, Sorry, I'll give you the better of the doubt next time.
