How to setup a Desktop Icon for Firefox Puppy4?

#1 Post by ichido »

How can I setup a Desktop Icon, like the "Browse", for Firefox Browser?
I'm using Puppy 4.
Most helps I've found are not accurate with Puppy 4.
I'm Stuck :(

AFAIK the procedure is the same for pup1, pup2, pup3 or pup4 versions...(and probably pup0 versions but my memory is hazy!).

Just drag the firefox binary, (AKA executable), onto the desktop, right click the desktop binary, then click "Set Icon", then drag a suitable icon onto the pop-up window.

Of course, it's even easier if there is an existing firefox.desktop file in /usr/share/applications, just drag that onto desktop, and "Edit Item" to change name.

When I drag-n-Drop the" Firefox-web-browser.desktop", from "/usr/share/applications) and then click on it, a Browser Titled "Bon Echo" opens. It looks like SeaMonkey not Firefox?
I cannot find the Firefox Binary?
I cannot find any Icon that looks like the Firefox Icon.
There is a "Firefox web browser" in the "Menu/Internet".

From what i can see, Puppy 4.00 does not have Firefox,
are you sure you do not have a derivative of some sort ?

Or have you added Firefox yourself, if so what package did you use ?

Bon Echo is Firefox 2.0, just a trunk build instead of an "official" build.

I use Puppy 4.00 and I used PETget to install "firefox-2.0.07 A full-features web browser".
Thanks for your reply.

Thanks.
Can I get a Full Version for Puppy 4.00 or do I need to upgrade to Puppy 4.10?
Thanks again.

I believe that 'full' official Puppies in the 4 series are all provided with SeaMonkey as the default browser - if you'd like to try adding Firefox to a 'barebones' puppy, that might work even better for you if you'd like to forgo the SeaMonkey experience altogether (but barebones are just that, you generally have to add .pets of your choice to flesh them out) - or there are also many 'unofficial' pre-made pupplets that are Firefox-based at puppylinux.org, here at the plmf (try the Additional Software (PUPS, n' stuff) or Puppy Derivatives threads) and elsewhere. In general, Firefox has a much better method for dealing with extensions than the SeaMonkey 1xxx series if you like to try those enhancements out (NoScript, ABP+ etc...). Puppy 4.00 is a fine version, but as always there are ongoing changes .. depending on your needs you might like to try a more recent version of Firefox (extension-matching can be strange at times).

 lizards
