Home n/w seen - but nobody at home! [Resolved]

#1 Post by Old Codger »

My machines have D-Link, Belkin x2 (6001 and 7000) and Realtek wifi through a D-Link access point. This all works fine in Windows and most other Linux distros.

Although my network is seen when I scan - so its is presumably not a hardware issue - it is very hit (5%) and miss (95%) whether I'll get a connection.

For historical reasons (which will be tackled in the future) I use static addressing but I just go round in circles with the wireless wizards. When I inspect the profile it frequently returns my IP and gateway to 0.0.0.0.

The Realtek on my laptop did connect briefly but fell over during a (Firefox) download, never to return.

The Belkin 7000 did sustain a connection (eventually).

Is there a very particular sequence in setting up a profile that will make it stick?

[NB This all from liveCD not an actual installation].

I use a Pluscom USB zd1211rw(b) and use the following allways . I also use a WAP number. So this is the way I do it.
:Click Menu>setup>network wizard.
Puppy Network Wizard dialogue box appears.
Your device should be in the Interfaces box.
Click on the device, then select the wlan0 button.
Configure network interface wlan0, dialogue box appears.
Click the wireless button. then click on the scan button.
Shortly your network( plus any others found) will appear, select your network then OK.
Your network should now be selected in Profile and essid.
If you need to enter a WEP or WAP number click on the appropriate box and enter the number.
Click save ( screen refreshes) then Use this profile.
Click AUTO DHCP.
Xdialog box saying network wlan0 successful etc. click YES.
Click DONE.
I have just typed this as I went through the setup in real time. I do this every time I set the wireless up and it always works.

Thanks for your reply, belfasteddie.

I already do exactly as you describe - except that I use static IP.

It seems that the information in that dialogue is never (fully) associated with the rest of the profile and/or it corrupts the IP settings to 0.0.0.0 (although the DNS servers are retained).

Success on all 4 machines.

The order is obviously critical.

I do as above first THEN set up the addresses. IF I get it right first time then all is well. Fail and it'll probably never work in that session...

most useful to see belfast eddie's list
and would be most helpful, o codger,
to see yr list of what address in what order you put
where...i had w'less working a few weeks
ago, after months of frustratation, now
back to square 0

so yr address-handling , not the addresses,
may help me creep towards connectivity,
relative newbie pls be as specific as poss

thanks, mm
