How do I update a full install?
How do I update a full install?
Is there an easy way to update my full (not frugal) install of Puppy to the latest version? The only way I know to do it right now is to update my USB installation, then replace my full install. I'm sure that this is the stupidest possible way to do it, but I can't see any other way.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, or has been answered a billion times, I tried to search for the answer both in the forums and on the wiki--I'm sure I just don't understand enough to construct the search right.

Updating a full install
Lytefoot,
I don't think you can update a full install of puppy, and you have to install the new version from scratch.
Please note however that I am NOT an expert, just repeating what I remember seeing on the forums at various times, and I stand open to correction.
Best of luck with the upgrade,
E.

Correct @EamonM
I have two Puppy partitions. When a new version comes out I install it on the one I am not currently using.
I then copy setting and pet's to the new install from the old one.
By the time a new version of Puppy comes out I have all the stuff from the old partition I need and I wipe it and install the new version.
Basically alternating between the two.
I also have a "Data" partition that never gets wiped.

I think you should be able to just boot from CD then install the new version over the top of the old one and it would basically work. I still haven't heard from anyone with a full install who actually tried though.
If you try it you might want to boot from CD then first mount the partition puppy is installed on and copy everything to another partition (or into a tarball or something) as a backup.

Thanks for asking as I was sitting here thinking the the same exact question.lytefoot wrote:Is there an easy way to update my full (not frugal) install of Puppy to the latest version? Also, the only 'stupid' question is the one not asked
The question gets asked frequently, but I haven't seen a real answer... lots of people assume it is impossible, but I still haven't seen a report from someone who actually tried just installing it over the top.

I almost always use full installs.
A few years ago I tried an update and ended up with broken links
and corrupted files.
Barry would sometimes say that the new iso had enough changes
that it would probably be best to start with a fresh install.
Decided to try again with a radical jump; from 4.1.2- k2.6.25.16
to a remastered 4.3.0- k2.6.30.5.
A fresh install of 4.1.2 with just internet connection made and a few
bookmarks.
Did a full upgrade with the universal installer expecting to see
something quite horrible.
My mind is blown !!!
It worked perfectly. !!
Not only did the newer Seamonkey still have the old bookmarks,
the internet connection wasn't even broken. That in itself is a small
miracle, as the 4.1.2 kernel used ath_pci module and the new 4.3.0
uses ath5k module (which is a real pain to get connected with
normally.)
One thing though: the grub on the mbr of the pc had previously
been made with a 4.3.0 cd. If it were the earlier grub, 4.3.0 would
have given an error 2 and not booted.
Still recommend making backups; just in case.
Tommorrow I'll try with 4.2.

RJ- what did you do with grub?
I've just tried to upgrade from 4.2 to 5.01, but can't get in. During the process, I was asked to add some text to menu.lst but the instructions don't tell me where to insert the text.
You had some success, so if you can recall what you did, I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks.

I don't see any way of upgrading from 4.xx to 5.xx series with fullbones01 wrote:I've just tried to upgrade from 4.2 to 5.01, but can't get in. During the process, I was asked to add some text to menu.lst but the instructions don't tell me where to insert the text.

or frugal.
Was able to copy .mozilla/default folder from seamonkey of 4.3.1
to Wary 020 seamonkey without problems.
Edit:
Running "upgrade install" from the same cd you installed with
is a quick and good method of repairing full installs with
corrupted file systems.
