How to set Default Media Players based on Media type?

#1 Post by JMW4th »

In my new-to-linux stupidity, there is one thing that I could do in Windows, that I have not been able to figure out to do in Puppy.

it sounds really simple too.

Basically, I want VLC to play all of my Video files by default.

I want an Audio Player of my choice(Aqualung for now, until i get around to switching) to play all of my audio files by default.

How do I do this?

Here's how I do it;

Menu>filesystem>pfind
type default
find default media player
usr/local/bin/default media player
right click icon>open as text
change gxineshell to vlc>save

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

there is a defaultaudioplayer file in /usr/local/bin is there not? or did i make one on my own? no, that's impossible, i'm an idiot, it must've already been there...

ANYWAYS

open it with a text editor, change gxine to vlc

try clicking on an audio file and if it doesn't open vlc, right-click on it, click 'set run action'

this would be the shell command:

Code: Select all

defaultaudioplayer "$1"

Or look at /root/Choices/Mimi-types where you can set actions for individual file types...the right click set action function in the newer rox seems to set everything to the one action which is really annoying and hard to undo...but great for a laugh at parties.

In VLC menus go to Tools > Preferences > in interface settings check the blocks "Allow only one instance" and "use only one instance when started from file manager"

Aqualung will not start automated playing a song when sent to Aqualung.

No, but I gave my old drum kit away for free to a music store collecting instruments for refugees!
