trying to set gmail to handle mailto links in seamonkey

#1 Post by barefoot »

hey people. i've spent a bit of time trying to get this to work with no success yet, so i turn to you.

firstly, i'm running puppy 4.3.1 frugal and seamonkey 2.0.3 and 1.1.18. if anyone has a solution that will work on either of these, let me know. i'd love to hear it.

this has been my approach so far:

first, i followed these instructions http://seamonkey.ilias.ca/browserfaq/mailto and set the following preference in my seamonkey about:config:
network.protocol-handler.external.mailto user set boolean true
i then tried to make seamonkey (the web-browser) the system default email client so that mailto links would go to it. didn't get anywhere down that road. none the less i still have that preference in my about:config.

i then set another preference in my about:config
network.protocol-handler.external.mailto user set string /root/my-applications/open_mailto.sh
i hoped that i could write a script called open_mailto.sh that would take the mailto info, insert it into a gmail url and pass it back to seamonkey to open a new window or tab with the url.

at this point, mailto links no longer triggered the seamonkey mail client, but instead triggred a pop window which read
mailto is not a registered protocol
.

i was just about to give up when, inexplicably, i clicked on a mailto link and got this message instead:

http://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B3KqNbx ... MDNk&hl=en

this behavior occurs in 1.1.18 but not 2.0.3 (even though i set the same about:config preferences described above in both of them). in 1.1.18, i can click the "launch application" button and, sure enough, the script runs. the problem is, i can't figure out how to write a script to open a new tab or window in 1.1.18.

in 2.0.3, i can use "seamonkey -new-tab <gmail mailto url mumbo jumbo>" to open a new tab, which makes the script seem feasible. however, 2.0.3 won't trigger the script and gives me the "mailto is not a registered protocol" message.

can anyone help?

my name is eric and i am addicted to solving little problems in puppy linux. :-)

I think you are going through more trouble than you have to. As usual, there are extensions for Mozilla products to do things like this.

In particular, take a look at GMail Manager, by Todd Long. You can find it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/1320

GMail Manager installs an icon in the system tray. It can display unread message counts, log on automatically to GMail, and alert you of new incoming mail. It can also be configured to handle mailto: links in GMail, which I believe is what you want.

Also I think you have more chance to receive a reply when you ask the question in a MozillaSeaMonkey forum.
This isn't really a puppy issue.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).
