Can I make Puppy Linux look like Windows?

I don't want to start any flame wars but just trying to help my 75-year old father out. You see he has a 6 year old Toshiba P4 based laptop. A Toshiba Satellite pro A45-S150 model to be exact. I recently put in a gig of extra RAM in the laptop. I basically got tired of heading over to my parents house and fixing the older laptop issues. You know the usual.

My father has used Windows since Windows 95 came out. He does not like change one bit. I may not get the exact look and feel as to a Windows environment. Due to legal issues but if I can provide something similar that would be great.

Maybe someone out there has created a remastered Puppy Linux that looks close to Windows. I really despise Windows but doing this for my father. I want Puppy Linux to breathe new life in his older laptop which I know it can do that.

By the way his needs are simple. Internet banking, browses Youtube videos, reads the news and types up documents.

I hope someone here can help me out with this.

Thank you.

Get Puppy 4.21 with Icewm built in and add the EZicewm-themes pack from here:
http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/EZPup/
Username: puppy
Password: linux

It will add a bunch of XP-like themes, with one that looks just like XP standard.

Restart with Icewm as the window manager and select a new theme from the menu.

I believe someone else has recently created an english version of a Russian puppy with a Windows XP look and feel too.

Searching the forum is easier if you do it with Google rather than the inbuilt search facility.

Hope that helps.

Maybe you refer to this Hungarian version. Is it Russian? Have the guy from Hungary reused a Russian earlier version? I don't know. I've thought about it as from Hungary all the time.

Can I make Puppy Linux look like Windows?
Yes.
But I suspect it would be more useful to make Puppy behave more like Windows. e.g. by using a filer that provides a "desktop is a folder" desktop like Windows. Apparently this can be done with PCmanFM as well as the heavier Xfce, Gnome or KDE. Apart from the pinboard/desktop, off the top of my head other things I can think of that Windows users find confusing or annoying are virtual desktops and window shading, which can be disabled, and the lack of a tree view or back and forward in Rox, which again you can get with other filers.

I downloaded Seven Puppy 06 :D , a Hungarian Puppy from there website yesterday.

The main problem with it (from my point of view) is that it is Hungarian only & my only language is English. Of course I know the more language files you include in an .iso the bigger the download is. I would go on there forum but Chromium (well my copy has any way) has problems with the site (only after successfully downloading the .iso).

Is there a quick fix or should I wait for an English version? :?

Hi,

- Might I suggest downloading and trying this link, It doesn't come off the ISO looking like XP, but the Thunar file manager behaves much like MS explorer and "GrumpyWolfe" pays attention to detail, it works very well.

As already mentioned , Icewm has some nice Redmond themes,
but Xfce and Thunar for example behave more like msWindows than Rox.

So the newest Quirky NOP 1.2 (Puppy derivat) could also be a choice.

Eventually add additional themes in the (usr/share/themes)- folder to get a more similar look .
For example: Smooth-XP GTK 2.x Theme http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=16732

1. Install the Fox+Xfe pair.

"X File Explorer" [Xfe] looks and works like Windows Explorer....
Except that it is MUCH SUPERIOR.

e.g. It can display a folder hierarchy plus 1 or 2 file-panes as you choose, by clicking the appropriate icon at the top of the window.

I always "Edit->Peferences->Themes->KDE3->Accept".
And...
Click any black ghostly icons at the bottom so they turn white [= hidden folders/files become un-hidden].

2. Post #210 with link to...."Original thread offering: XP-like puppy ENGLISH version".
And...
WARNING in post #211=
"BEWARE:
I'm having problems with this XP-like Puppy; programs won't work after installation!"

3. The above are included in my Puppy Linux thread at the PC-Guide.
For lots of Puppy goodies, begin at the end of the thread and work backwards.
Here is the present last = page 11.

Is this what you mean? These are screenshots (1024x768) of 4.31 with EZ-Pup (icewm), tweaked the icewm theme WinXP-Royale menu colors and font size, added XFE and used the gradient brown GTK theme. XFE is using the KDE3 theme as Sylvander suggested.

Yes, you can. Here are some screenshots of Quirky NOP I quickly put together for you. If you like what you see, I can send you the icon and gtk themes.

Hi Ragaman!

While I really don't care all that much for the "Window's Look" ( after all, when I last used 98se YEARS ago I built my own desktop GUI which mimicked the MacOS to the "T" ), I just had to post to the thread to add my own two cents by saying that's a very handsome screenshot you've shown here of your NOP-Quirky! Very handsome indeed!

Thank you for having shared mate!

Cheers/Amicalement,

Thanks Eyes-Only.

I really don't care much about XP look myself but since the thread starter asked for it, I tweaked QNOP to that effect.
