I reported some days ago on lupu 503 a problem with the wifi connection at boot (a properly set connection is not restaured at the next boot from CD, though the pupsave is well loaded).
This problem still exists on 507.
Anyone to look at that :?:

Lupu-507 testing

#1302 Post by scruffy »

Fresh frugal install of Lupu 507
--------------------------------
Sound and Internet working out of the box.

NVIDIA-96.43.16_lupu500-k2.6.33.2.pet installed- glxgears working fine
Icewm-themes-1.2.26-Lucid installed in PPM
WhoDoCollection-1.0 installed in PPM
Wine-1.1.43-Lucid.pet installed from quickpet then Spotify.exe installed
Pwidgets installed from quickpet
Install Python-2.6-Lucid from PPM
Install Gtk-RecordMyDesktop-0.3.8-Lucid

Switch to Icewm and started Spotify which works fine - ice themes are great!
All installed applications work perfectly as far as I can see.

Install 'LAMP' pet PHP-Mysql-Hiawatha
Add Klavaro typing tutor sfs file in Bootmanager

reboot

All installed applications working - impressive effort developers! .

Tested 507 on two of my computers see signature.

Worked on both of them.

I did not dare to test to use wine and spotify.

Can someone confirm that particukar program work in wine.

On my both gears it has always shut down the x to a prompt each time.

There exists a new spotify free for linux but that one take away my old account features so that is a no no to me just now.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Playdaz,

I am stuck in my ways. I always use root (/) and yes, the version was 431 to the best of my knowledge.

JamesC. I haven't been able to reproduce Opera 10.60 working correctly, stopping and starting youtube videos. I installed Firefox but that didn't help me. Have you added any Firefox plugins?

Had you changed ffmpeg by any chance? No, doesn't seem to be that. I tried both of the extras in PPM.
I may lose my net access at any moment, waiting to receive a new modem from the isp which means waiting for the big brown truck. So far, resetting the old modem gets me a few minutes.

I haven't added any Firefox plugins and I don't see anything in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ that would make a difference.................but Opera is working correctly so it's finding something somewhere.

I've installed FF,Arora,my Thunar pet,Pwidgets and the icewm themes and WhoDo's stuff.................

The plugin path on the Opera pet I built is /usr/lib/opera/plugins
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

I'll poke around and see if I can figure how how it's working.Could Opera be finding something outside of the Puppy 507 psubdir?(folder I installed Lupu-507 in)

I can confirm Spotify works fine in Wine (you may need the latest windows version).

In Icewm it worked without any changes.
In JWM you need to use Utilities>Wine Config>graphics and uncheck all 4
windows settings.

Problem with USB speaker (used to work in 431 or 500)

#1307 Post by PuppyUSBUser »

Tested with Lupu-507 Beta 2. Fresh installation, booted with pfix=ram.

My USB speakers that used to work with puppy 431 or lupu 500, do not work any more.
They are recognized at startup:

Code: Select all

usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
input: Logitech Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.2/usb7/7-1/7-1:1.2/input/input10
generic-usb 0003:046D:0A1A.0002: input: USB HID v1.00 Device [Logitech Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700] on usb-0000:00:1d.2-1/input2
Alsa sound wizard gives me the option to configure the speakers, but the test sound at the end of the configuration is played on my built-in speakers and not on the USB speakers. Running the sound wizard a second time results in an error message that the usb device cannot be recognized. The reasons for this being:

Code: Select all

HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A disabled
usbcore: deregistering interface driver snd-usb-audio
HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0
HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: irq 29 for MSI/MSI-X
HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64
There seems to be a problem with the ALSA configuration script.

playdayz: Were you in JWM? Just testing Opera 10.60 a moment ago...............I've been in ICEWM and Opera is working fine as I described. However, I switched over to JWM and Opera reverted to the old behavior like you've been experiencing.IE, not working.

Went back to ICEWM and Opera 10.60 is working correctly again. Able to start and stop Youtube videos at will.Seems like I recall another app that didn't work correctly in JWM also.

Try Opera in ICEWM and see what happens.I'll try it live pfix=ram w/ Opera in ICEWM to confirm.

Lupu 507 upgrading Lucid 500 pupsave file

#1310 Post by scruffy »

First run of Lupu-507 upgrading Lucid 500 pupsave file.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All applications from original Lucid 500 work ok.Only a few cosmetic changes were needed.

1) JWM theme (which I had added to Lucid 500) had to be reselected.
2) As previously reported desktop icons needed some rearrangement.
3) Default Browser had to be reset.
4) Menu option System->System Status and Config->Nvidia Xserver Settings missing an icon

Saving to whole partition

#1311 Post by shinobar »

JustGreg wrote:I tried 507. Its frugal installation worked fine with a pupsave file. I tried to use the option of save to partition (partition is ext2). On reboot, it failed to boot. It could not find things. I know frugal with save to entire ext2 partition should work. I do not have an idea of why it failed.
I tested lupu-507 on Qemu virtual PC. Bland new (virtual)hdd formated ext2 and frugal install at the top(/). Confirmed save to the whole partition...no problem.
When you do frugal install on top(/), puppy may confuse at boot if you have another puppy or any linux anywhere on the same PC.
So i recommend frugal install on sub-directory. As you know in this case, frugal install on sub-directory, save to whole partition is not supported.
rcrsn51 wrote:I've always thought that the concept of a frugal install that saved to an entire partition was far too confusing for newcomers.

People who want to save to an entire partition are probably going to use a full install anyway.

I would be happy if that option just disappeared.
I DO agree with rcrsn51.
Saving to whole partition, 'pfix=ram' does not work anymore. What is the difference with FULL install then?

Which tool do you use to connect?
if you have a trouble with Simple Network Setup, try Network Wizrd.
Still have the trouble, right click the connect icon on the desktop and select 'Autoconnect' after boot up.

The easy, *fast* way to update the puppy-lucid repo is to download this file and copy it into /root/.packages. it will overwrite the current file. Then you might have to restart the X server, or even reboot.

Thanks for updates :)

Cool used to use Eudora in Windows
so will try that . . . :)

In Inkscape lite the two bottom icons are the same
or at least unstable . . . (I know how they feel)
Anyone else get that or am I hallucinating - again?
Can not export or save either . . .

Installed Eudora using the downloadable 'quick update' method you mention
Had to use the 3rd download location (first two are not working - yet)

Eudora was a doddle to set up with my gmail account
compared to what I remember with modem settings . . .
Did not test it - just wanted to recommend others have a look
seems OK . . .

Thanks guys :)

Help on menu wrong address

#1315 Post by bigpup »

Lupu-507 Beta 2

When using Netsurf as default viewer;
Help on menu when selected brings up this address in Netsurf browser viewer:

file://file///usr/share/doc/index.html

This gives you a page source view.

Should be: file:///usr/share/doc/index.html

This gets a readable help page.

Hi all

A little hicup with Ayttm, Working great then for half a day was giving the uprade available error and msn would not accept the certificate,
Then without doing anything went back to normal.

Is there any way to alter the code to prevent it checking for upgrades?

Everything looks great, well done :D :D

Thanks for the wizard Igulender, it´s a good idea.

I found a little typo in your code, hinting and autohint uses the same $hinting variable:

Code: Select all

<edit name="hinting" mode="assign">
<bool>$hinting</bool>
</edit>
 <edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
<bool>$hinting</bool>
</edit>
There is no sense to put the Automatic hinting option if this is already controlled by the hinting option value.

Older Nvidia video card driver

#1319 Post by bigpup »

Using Lupu-507 Beta 2

At first boot suggested using Xorg High as best video driver for several older Nvidia video cards.
Tried it on them and it worked ok.

In Puppy Package Manager installed Nvidia-173.14.25_Lupu 500-k2.6.33.2 driver package and this is much better for these cards. Vast improvement in performance.
Would be good to add to Quickpet.
Would be nice if this was the driver suggested for these cards on initial startup.

Nvidia nv37gl Quadro PCI-E series
Geforce FX5700LE AGP

I get this in Quickpet when select test your graphics card.

The quadro isn't in the database, ok, but the geforce is..

can you do this.. run

Code: Select all

lspci|grep VGA
or, post a screeny of quickpet when you hit the graphics card test button on the drivers page for the geforce too?

Cheers
