How to use HP Color LaserJet CP1215?

I have an HP Color LaserJet CP1215. I have tried installing it with the CUPS Printer Wizard but cannot find it in the list of available printer drivers. I have tried several but not all of the other HP Color Laserjet printer drivers but none seem to be able to work. Any suggestions or am I just out of luck? Thanks

Maybe this will help:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... p1215.html

If using Lucid Puppy 5.1.1
Look in Puppy Package Manager for drivers.

Go here and get the hpijs-3.10.6-dynppd.pet. It has a driver for your Color LJ cp1215.

I downloaded and installed the hpijs-3.10.6-dynppd.pet as you suggested. It did indeed have a driver for my HP Color LaserJet CP1215. However it fails to print. Here is the message that CUPS gives when I try to give a print command.
----------------------------
stopped
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
-----------------------------
Also there is note with the driver that it requires a proprietary plugin. I have searched for the plugin but have not found it. Even the HP website driver download page says the plugin is required but from what I can see doesn't tell you how to get it.

I appreciate your patience and continued help.

Which Puppy version are you using?

(edit) ISO says Lupu-510

These HP printers with proprietary plugins are really annoying. Some older models are handled with a non-HP driver that works in Puppy. But it doesn't cover your cp1215.

If you were using a big-boy distro like Debian, which includes a compiler, you would download the full HPLIP package and auto-install your printer. Supposedly, it would then let you download the magic plugin.

But these plugins don't seem to be available through any other source. I tried to set up my own HP printer using a compiler environment, but the HP auto-installer didn't work anyway.

There is an alternate HP package for Puppy here that has optional plugin-support. Unfortunately, the download site it directs you to does not offer a plugin for your model. You could try some of the others.

The easiest approach would be to just download the install_hp_plugin-2.0.pet from lluamco's thread and try one of the plugins for the Color LJ 3500.

Sorry, but can you please elaborate on where I can find Iluamco's thread to download the install_hp_plugin-2.0.pet along with a plugin for Color LJ 3500? Somehow I am missing that. Thanks.

I think I just found the thread from Iluamco you referred to. I'll let you know if it helps.

Well no luck so far. Your right. Plugins for printers are a pain!

I have downloaded and installed the install_hp_plugin-2.0.pet from lluamco's thread and then downloaded and installed the Color LJ 3500 plugin but it did not help. I also tried installing HPLIPLITE but it doesn't help either. I go to the cups management at local host:631 and tell the printer to print a test page it sends it and gives the message it is processing and then it disappears and when I click on show completed jobs it shows it as completed but it does not actually print.

I also have a HP Laserjet 1020 that also needs a plugin. There is a specific plugin available for the HP LJ 1020. However, I have done the same process for it and get the very same result.

Any other ideas?

There is a driver package for your LJ1020 called foo2xxx that is well-tested in Puppy. Go here and get Item #13. I don't know if anyone has used it with CUPS 1.4.3 but it should work OK.

However, at this point, you should do a fresh install to get rid of all the stuff that did not work.

BTW, to make these plugin systems work, you need to reboot the printer or your full computer. When the printer is re-detected, the firmware plugin gets downloaded to the printer.

I am testing these printer drivers on a usb frugal install. I have learned to back up my lupusave file before I make any major changes so I can go back to it if need be. I downloaded the foo2xxx driver package and did a fresh install. It worked great. The LJ1020 now printers fine.

So one problem solved. Thanks so much. Is there anything else I can do to try and get the color laserjet cp1215 printing? Thanks again.

Other than changing distros, I don't think so.

Didn't you need foo2hp? Did you find it?

You might try installing this foo2zjs-hp-cp1215-i486 package : http://www.datafilehost.com/download-ce28332c.html
Please consider it a test, since I have not been able to check it myself!
I hope that helps.

Oops! I didn't read all the way through the list of supported printers! It looks like the foo2xxx package that you already have should support your cp1215.

Disciple. Is foo2hp not part of the foo2xxx driver package that rcrsn51 suggested? That is what I downloaded and installed along with the install_hp_plugin-2.0.pet and the hp_laserjet_1020.plugin. It looks to me that in the link you sent me Patriot posted the same basic instructions. I'm just thankful I finally got a printer to work.

Thank you lluamco. I will download it, give it a try and let you know if it works.

yes the foo2xxx does support the color LJ cp1215 but is the problem most likely in the fact that there is no specific pluggin available that I can find? I tried just using the driver from the foo2xxx package with the CLJ cp3500 plugin but it doesn't work.

The foo2xxx package is self-contained. You don't need to install any other plugin stuff.

Did it not set up your printer on its own?
