Hi,
have been using puppy for a while, but on an old laptop with no hard drive.
Booting from a cd, and saving to a usb flash drive has been the solution... BUT because the usb is slow (usb1) I have been forced to keep the pup_save file very small (only 32mb) so it won't become unbearable slow.
My question:
is it possible to avoid the usb flash and store the pup_save files on a network drive?
I don't want to load the whole system through the network - only the configuration files... (the bios doesn't support booting from network).
The network would be much faster than the usb, so I could increase the file size
than you for answering (and I'm sorry if this information already is here, but I couldn't manage to find it...)

Always report the puppy version and what type of install you have.
Generally, yes you can select any available partition when asked to create a save file.
If that network partition is listed, you can select it.

My guess is that you will not be able to boot a pupsave on the network.jenciso wrote:Hi,

As Béèm notes, if the partition is "listened" at boot, you could do so, but I'm guessing that your network is not visible until you finish booting -- and it needs access to the pupsave at the beginning of the boot process.
However, you could continue with your small pupsave on the USB1.1, and store the majority of your files outside the pupsave (even if on /mnt/home, which is your USB drive, it should be written to the drive before shutdown).
I had used a USB1.1 on a laptop for booting, and used a PCMCIA USB 2.0 which had a much larger storage device, where I stored most of my files. Though I eventually moved the pupsaves onto my HDD.
Further, if you have a PCMCIA USB 2, it is possible that rcrsn51's suggestion will allow booting from a flash drive in that device (I haven't tried this on mine, yet):

RTG, you probably are right.
There is work for developers to make a initrd in which a network drive is made accessible for loading of a safe file.
BTW, I corrected my typing error.

Now that would be rather cool!Béèm wrote:RTG, you probably are right.

We just need to move the various network and device scans up further in the boot sequence, so it can find them at boot time...
I thought "listened" fits quite well (I quite liked the term -- and didn't think of it as a typo). Unfortunately, the network device probably isn't "talking', so the computer won't be able to hear it, to find the pupsave...BTW, I corrected my typing error.
