FFS what the hell is with all these similar names/builds??? How are users supposed to know what's the "official" build? A search on google for "puppy linux" gives users links to puppylinux.org, puppylinux.com, murga-linux, and more... All saturated with broken links of course...

What exactly is the point of this? Apparently linux isn't confusing enough as is, so the consensus was "we'll make so confusing they won't even know what or where to download it!"

Somebody needs a drink!!!
As long as you found your way here... which apparently you have done 50 some times, You can always ask, and the use of slang, poor language translation and just plain drunken sloppiness may be revealed...

Refund dept here.
Your full refund is on its way.

We do our best but are a bunch of volunteers.
Some slackers even have families, jobs and lives outside Puppy
(I am thinking they may have to be excommunicated from the Puppy Cult)

Internal Lucid development uses the name 'Luci'
and Lupu for releases

So for example a download is called lupu-521.iso
when released but testers and developers may be using Luci-253.iso

Sorry for the confusion.

The official builds are mentioned in the top line of the benevolent dictator's web site:

http://puppylinux.com/

If you track to the download page you will find out where to get them.

Couldn't be simpler.

When you go to any other puppy site you are in the hands of the community - with all its faults. You either accept them or don't bother visiting them. You will miss out on a lot if you follow the latter path.

But the reason it looks so confusing could be blame? on google ways of using the latest entry on the forum and not the latest on the official puppy linux site as the first entry and not what are done by Barry or anybody else here in the forum. But I do agree that it took me a while to get this LuciLupu thing. Despite me had tested very many of them I had no clue on why they changed name all the time :)

Google have the habit of listing the newest thing first. So entries in the forum get high up.

The forum represent the user of the forum and not what Barry Kauler has pronounced to be the approved of official release so as Icpug and others already explained there are an official site with the authorized links to isos and then you have all the derivatives that Puppy News have linked to and then only after looking there then you can try out all the personal takes that is for testing in the forum and individual experiments that don't are approved of by Barry.

But I can be wrong but most likely it is due to Google doing instant update of the latest entry on the forum and that sure looks confusing even to me whom are active here every day.

not an ideal solution though

Here's one example of what I assume is happening:

1. Lu[cid] Pu[ppy] [the full official name] is shortened to Lupu to name the official ISO file.

2. The developers use Luci for short, so what they're working on is differentiated from what will later become Lupu.

I'd rather have the chaos of freedom, than the order Fascism. :D

"By their fruits you shall know them".

Nooby,

You cannot blame Google (or any other search engine) for linking to all the Puppy references and not putting the official site first. How is Google to know? Putting most recent info first seems a sensible approach to me.

Users of the web have to use their brains as well as their mouse. Not everything said on wikipedia is true - search engines do not know the 'best' result for your need - people who make comments on any news item/software/... are not necessarily experts in the field on which they make comments!

I regard Distrowatch as pretty expert with regards to info on Linux distributions and they correctly list www.puppylinux.com as home of the puppy project and link to all sorts of other places separately.

We have to encourage Murga and Flash and all the other Mods to find a way to make that link available on every page of the forum unless that make google hit back on puppy for trying to raise awareness in deceptive ways.

I've been active here now since 2008? and would not know of www.puppylinux.com if a neighbor asked me how to find puppy

nooby; back when puppy 4.0 was New, if you were to google [not bing!! ] puppy linux, the first result used to be puppylinux.com, I believe followed by puppy.org, and you would have had to search a bit for the murga forum.
Just a matter of google hits I think....

I've added the link to my signature so maybe that make at least one more person aware of a neat way to find the puppy linux site :)

Nooby - If you used your browser bookmarks, instead of relying on your memory, you would :D

I googled 'puppy linux' just now. The first 3 links quite clearly state Puppy Linux Community - Home. The next link just says Puppy Linux and links to the official site. Then some links to Distrowatch and wikipedia and eventually a link to the quite clearly stated Puppy Linux Forum. Is it that difficult?

As for encouraging Murga - may I direct your attention to the top of whatever forum page you are looking at. The second line says:

Puppy home page: puppylinux.com

So you do not even have to use your browser bookmarks!

Family tree:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... id-520.htm

Get the .iso here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... puppy-5.2/

Older versions and other stuff here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... uppylinux/

Barry's Quirky and Wary series here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ns/quirky/

And the name escapes me, but there is a European mirror of Ibiblio (or vice-versa).

Yes it needs to be a clickable link.
Puppy Linux Discussion Forum
Puppy home page: puppylinux.com
I saw it now for the first time thanks to ICPUG

I've actually looked for how to find Barry many times and used the wellminded search and google and so on. I had no idea it was up there.

Honestly.

I bow out of this very interesting thread now. My pleasure!
