Linux 3.0 announced July by Linus. Puppy?

#1 Post by nooby »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel
3.0 https://www.kernel.org/ Linus Torvalds (current only)
(releases every two-three months)
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g ... ;a=summary

I am a noob so I have no idea what it is all about but a kernel is a kernel so maybe it will take some time or is it available for Puppy Devs already?

what kind of new features can one expect.

Hope it is okay if I tease a bit. May I predict that this new kernel makes it impossible to be root :)

that would be kind of expected or maybe kernels don't care about such things? Just hoping a big friendly smile on everybody's faces.

not an ideal solution though

If you look at your chart at wikipedia, you will see odd numbers are not releases we use.

No 2.1, 2.3, 2.5

Yes 2.2, 2.4, 2.6

I don't know if zero is even or odd. 3.0

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Both of your texts look okay here so what did you change in the second one where you quoted yourself? :)

Maybe we use the kernel 3.0 in a nightly build test version for Devs? or something and it has a 2.6 or whatever name?

0 is an even number. linux-3.0 is the equivalent of linux-2.6.40. It's simply a number change which doesn't imply any other changes, although some scripts which rely on the output from 'uname' may have to be adjusted to fit the new numbering scheme. When 3.1 or other odd-numbered versions come out, they will not be development versions -there is no more 2.3, 2.5 the way there used to be. The main branch to used be only even-numbered release, and the odd-numbered were development branches. But now the main branch (linus' branch) *is* the development branch.

You're right.

Zero, I mean just a zero. Is that an even number also?

I should know, but I guess I never thought of it until now.

A number is called even if it is an integer multiple of 2. Zero is an integer multiple of 2, namely 0 × 2, so zero is even.

:D Hello,
Been trying to compile 3.0 off and on since its release...
Getting close, but no "cookie" yet.. :(
Well, I got one workable version, but it was 75mb...
Still wasnt right... Last one was 27mb, and got as far as:
"failed to mount root filesystem on"

I think the kernel is OK, but the initrd must not be...
Oh well...
Lots of fun trying...
So far I`m really satisfied with 2.6.38.4
But still gotta try....
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world
