can your abiword see this .doc document?

I thought Abiword handled .doc documents, but here's one where all I can see is a single line of text. The illustration doesn't appear. http://www.speedyshare.com/files/29991847/file234.doc

There is supposed to be a diagram accompanying that text. Readers using windows can see the diagram. Anyone have a version of Abiword that displays the diagram? I'm using Abiword 2.8.6, it's bundled with Wary 1.2

Alternatively, use the attached the file. You'll need to first rename it as a .doc file. Forum software doesn't allow a .doc file as an attachment.

First, the download went fine this time.
Now to the basics.
Abiword does not show the diagram for me either.
But....
If you get the LibreOffice33.SFS, Writer in it shows the diagram just fine.
So if you are trying to view the document off-line, that will work for you.

BTW, when I right-click on the file and select Properties, it is reported as a Microsoft Word document.

Downloaded file234.zip (35 kB?) but there's nothing inside it when I extract it with XArchive.

Just change it from .zip to .doc.

Only get one line with Abiword 2.8.6 in Slacko.

Just to confirm.
It's a MS Word document with an embedded Word picture. I can't tell the origin of the picture.
Abiword (old version 2.6.3) can't see the picture.
Openoffice (old version 2.2) sees it fine.
Textmaker (2008, Linux) can't see the picture, but a frame shows there is an object there. If you then attempt to rotate the object with the handle it gives you, Textmaker crashes.
In Windows, the document opens fine in either Word or Textmaker. If you rotate the object in Textmaker (Word does not offer this option), this works. If you then save the document from Windows Textmaker 2008, the resulting file opens fine in Linux Textmaker (file size is doubled). However, Abiword still can't see anything, and Openoffice doesn't see the rotation that was done.

Well done! Thanks for the detailed analysis. I hoped another version of Abiword would succeed. I think the *Office installs would be larger than I'm comfortable with, so for the time being I'll have to skip those .docs that don't work.

I have received emails with .doc files attached and needed oo to view them. I keep a distro with kde 3.5.1 installed for that purpose.

Thank you. I didn't read the first post carefully enough. :oops:

Now when I click on it Abiword 2.8.6 opens with:
Using kirchoffs laws calculate the current in each branch shown
and nothing else. No circuit diagram.

Abiword is notorious for not handling graphic elements. But it's interesting that Textmaker couldn't do it either.

Shep,
If you are concerned about LibreOffice or OpenOffice taking up a lot of room in a frugal installs pupsave, you can get the SFS file and one of the Load on the fly SFS installers.
The installed SFS takes very little room in your pupsave and is easily removable.
Of course if you did a full install of Puppy, that is a different story.

And as to AbiWord handling MS Word files in the future, we can only hope.
