Firefox freezing a lot on Puppy?

I'm seeing the latest versions of firefox freeze a lot on Lucid 5.2.5. I'm curious if anyone else has been seeing this? I suspect its flash related but not sure.

Firefox is almost unusable now. Fortunately, chrome is fine as are the usual puppy browsers (seamonkey). I've seen this on more than one machine too.
I don't know if this is a firefox thing because all I use these days is puppy

Those were definitely issues in my setup but it is still stalling considerably. I may have to accept Chrome is just better now. At least firefox is more usable now if I need it! Thanks...

I turned off all the addons and graphics and now it works fine. I would turn on things to see what is causing the issue, but right now I am enjoying my superlight browser and not missing all the ad-junk I'm not seeing or wasting my limited bandwidth on...

Glad it's working smoothly.

Some time ago, with the version 7 of firefox, I had experienced some freeze with flash videos.

It was because of an old system library, and after replace/update it, everything worked fine.

I`ve had lots of trouble with Firefox lately. It works good for awhile, then goes to hell.

Finally installed Opera which works fast and good.
But it doesn`t import Firefox`s bookmarks very well.

I switched from 5.28 back to 5.25,
but still no luck with FF 8.0.

Clicking the About button initiates an auto upgrade to 8.0
which then freezes.

Switched to IRON browser and it works fine.

I also wrote an HTML file to load for the 'home' file,
which contains all my usual URLs. Works better than 'favorites'.

I have several thousand URLs in my 'favorites', in various 'folder',
collected compulsively.

Some time back, I exported as with the HTML option,
to a file BookMarks_.html. This was a MegByte or more.
Later I went back and selected the 'top 100' which were the ones I revisited often,
such as Yahoo.com, Puppy Linux Forum, Electrical Forum, etc.

These top 100 were copy/pasted into another text file,
which became the standard 'front page' for me.
This 'front page' has a link to the larger file
which became a seldom used 'repository'.

I used Libre-Office to handle these as 'text' files
for the initial visual arrangement.
After that, I used Geany to modify, add new URL, etc,
because it did not re-arrange the text placement on my editing screen,
and I could line up all the placements, like this:

I also embedded a lovely JPG from SirPecanGum,
from London, England,
of some Japenese Maple branches
hanging over a mist shrouded lake.
To me it is a nice touch.

Are you not glad that you don't have this compulsive tendency ?

I upgraded to 9.01 and it seems to work OK for me on 5.2.8 (frugal install). I did have that problem with FF8, but used the solution on the forum.

There are still a couple flaws. I can't get Amazon cloud player to work as well as Google docs. I downloaded Opera, and use it for Google docs.

In FF you can turn off automatic updates under Preferences, Advanced and under the UPDATE tab. You can turn off automatic updates. And also click on the item "ask me what to do" to really nail it down.

I have found that FireFox ver 7 works okay with Puppy v. 5.28.
But update to Ver 8 or 9 and my system locks up.

Uninstalling then reinstalling starting with ver 7, then allowing it to upgrade to ver 9 won't work either. System still locks up.

Further, under ver 9 my quite extensive collection of Bookmarks and Folders cannot be restored from the backup files that I have created over the past two years. Whenever I try to restore my bookmarks from the backed up .json file, Firefox cannot process the file.

If I knew of a way to export all my bookmarks into another browser I would.

After installing, updating and uninstalling several times, I am just gonna decide to stick with ver 7 as it seems to work okay. My browsing life is happy now.

If anyone knows how to port bookmarks over to another browser I'd be indebted to you if you could share the beans. (other than saving to an html file.... my collection of bookmarks is just too extensive)

If your mass of bookmarks is so extensive,
then you may never have the time to revisit them.

See my post above to Sunburnt, about the 'html' method.
That is an "alternative" solution to the direct import.

In Libre-Office my mass file is 224 pages long .odt
In Geany my mass file is 1.2 MBytes .txt.

I culled out the top 100 into a 3 pager for daily use,
and find it easily updatable.

It allows active hyper-links to all URLs so listed,
and can be attached to any browser that has 'home' page capability.

One drawback I see is that it is not a 'dynamic' database method.
Manipulating these URLs via My-SQL and linking that into a browser
would be a major writing project. (It is beyond me)
We can agree on that.

Perhaps a Website on your own Webserver would do the job ?

For many things creating completely brain dead HTML in a file will do the job.
Your web browser will open a local file and then follow a link from that to some external web page. It will also follow a link to a different local file or a anchor within the file you have open. You can classify the links this way.

I haven't nailed down exactly what causes the problem. But it does indeed seem to be Flash related.

I've been tinkering with creating a new custom Lucid 5.28 cd for friends and family and have experimented with several save files.

I'm finding that when you load the pet for v8, everything is fine. (Use the pet for v8 - do NOT start with v7 or earlier and then upgrade to v8!)

When you upgrade to v9 from within Firefox, everything still seems okay.

But then when you install or update Flash, things sometimes go horribly wrong. If the Flash update/install misfires, Firefox simply freezes while trying to load pages. It's a repeat of the nightmare we all had when v8 first came out.

Tips for relatively new users (like myself) -

(1) install more than one browser. We've had issues with new versions of Firefox several times this year. So you want to have at least one alternative handy for the next time a Firefox upgrade acts up.

(2) turn off automatic updates in the Preferences menu. Once Firefox is working properly, don't let it change itself and mess everything up!

I wanted to include the latest Firefox on the custom disc I'm creating, as the goal is to introduce some long-time Windows users to the joys of Puppy.

Most people I know are familiar with Firefox, so it would be the ideal browser to use. Many of them would be far more likely to try out the disc if they know it includes the same browser that they already use.

Unfortunately, there wouldn't be much joy if they ended up trashing their browser the first time they messed with a Flash update. So I'm leaning towards installing SeaMonkey and Iron instead.

I am running the latest version of SeaMonkey and I also am having a problem with it seeming to go into a suspended mode where clicking on a post or any area does not seem to work and if I am replying to a post, it is like the input from my PC is not displayed and then plays catchup after a major pause.
Also, Pressing Function key F5 for refresh takes it on its way if it gets stuck.
But something is just not right.
I am currently running Slacko 5.3.1 with Compiz fusion and using SeaMonkey 2.5.

Also, although I have not hit the "Check for Updates" tab, evidently SeaMonkey 2.6 is out there.

Is it just me and a flakey connection to the internet, or are others seeing major pauses when surfing or entering posts?

Yeah... FF use to be the best, but it`s been screwed up for so long now...
Version after version just produces new problems, and then there`s crap Flash.

Opera + Flash is okay, but it has trouble with certain pages, dead buttons, etc.
