Anyone used Microsoft Office 2010 in Puppy?

#1 Post by rmcellig »

I was just wondering if anyone out there who uses Microsoft 2010 successfully in Puppy Linux 5.2.8

The reason I ask is because my wife is getting a copy from work and needs to install it on her PC. Right now I have her trying out Puppy Linux instead of her running XP Pro . So far she likes it but her main concern is the ability to use Microsoft Office 2010.

Rmcellig, take a look at PlayOnLinux- sounds like what you're after. And no, haven't used it..

Wine works but is not ideal

Use Virtual box in either Puppy or Windows

What I would do is have XP on my hard disk
and boot Puppy from CD/DVD when I need to bank or use LibreOffice
(MS Office compatible)

Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

SoftMaker Office - is an excellent alternative to MS - Free or Pay - Your choice.
Runs on most Puppy's.

Hi rmcellig,

I have a very similar situation and am running Office 2007 under Wine with reasonable success, Word, Excel and PowerPoint work satisfactorily with a few quirks. Access starts but is unusable.

I tried installing Office 2010 a year ago with no success at all. Browsing WineHQ for Office2010, Word, etc. tells me that things now aren't much better. It will install in Ubuntu but it doesn't sound like it runs that well.

My main Office suite now is SoftMaker Office 2010. :D It is essentially a clone of MSOffice 2000 but will open and use .docx and .xlsx files. SMOffice 2012 will also open .pptx files but they haven't released the Linux version yet.

They were offering SMOffice2008 for free but it wouldn't handle the new file formats and it looks like the free program is over  Barry made a .pet out of it but you still need to get a registration key from Softmaker.

No solution to using Access files, other than booting up Windows. :x

Good Luck with this, J

Microsoft Office 2010 Working

#7 Post by FrogLeader »

Hi FrogLeader here.

Office 2010 is working fine.

Step1 Install latest wine from user GreenDome:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=53675

Set wine config at winXP.

** Download and install winbind from puppy package manager.
Very Important. Registration window will NOT work without it.

Run setup of Office and enter in the code when prompted. It will take some time. Be patient.

When setup is done. Open wine config and enter a new app. Search through Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\ Find POWERPNT.EXE

When it's highlighted click the libraries tab and set riched20 to native, builtin. PowerPoint will now work just fine. The only bug is that it freezes when trying to play the slideshow but everything else works.

Nothing fancy for Word. It runs right out of the box.

Set the .exe files to your desktop as a shortcut and choose a nice icon.

Enjoy :)

Softmaker do have deb versions of 2008. The full 2010 Windows version was on May PCPro DVD
You can also install it to USB/Disk as a Portable Version and that runs well under Wine.
