ath9k - SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address

I'm running Slacko 5.3.1 on a 2gb USB.
Puppy recognizes my wireless interface as Athros ar9300 using the driver ath9k which appers to be right.

But when doing ifconfig wlan0 up either in console or through one of the wifi applications I get the error:

ifconfig: SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address

Any ideas?

Slacko 5.3.3 is built on a newer kernel. It might work better.
