Hi all
Can anyone help with the following in Puppy 4.3.1?
EDIT:
(Discovered how to do 1 simply by modifying /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin)
1) Removing icons from the desktop.
I tried right click then remove item(s) but it's back on next boot.
I need something permanent.
2) Adding a shortcut on the desktop (i.e. opposite of above).
Thanks.
Dave.
Desktop Icon management
Hi Dave_G
Hmm, the 'revert' was fairly usual for the very first reboot after an initial run on a fresh pup - somewhat disconcerting to be sure and just one of those rox things. The file to look at is /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin (as you've found), that's what sets it all as to content and position on the backdrop. You can even set it on-demand if you like for the official path or I keep several custom roxpins one level up in Choices for various preset looks/arrangements.
Often it helps to set a medium or coarse grid rather than fine to help snap the icons into position (rclick in a roxfiler window -> options ..).
Drag'n'drop is how you add a desktop icon - easiest is from /usr/share/applications dir, then edit the name so .desktop isn't on the lable and shorten it, make it a blank label or whatever (change the icon if you like to a larger or smaller and so on).
The exception is change-state icons like driveicons, trash, and a few others (the 'real' icon for those is a .DirIcon inside the appdir which is a link to the current state icon in /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps.

Code: Select all
rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin

How are you running Puppy 4.3.1?
Live CD, frugal or full install?
Live CD, frugal or full install?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

Hi `f00
Thanks for the great tips, I didn't know about the rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin thing.
Before editing my /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin, I made a backup of it
and I rather like the idea of keeping several PuppyPins for different uses.
I will look into the .desktop files and see how to add shortcuts via scripts too.
Hi bigpup
I always run Puppy on frugal with devx and my save file.
