Wary 5.3 not recognizing network components

#1 Post by tmm2112 »

I've been a Puppy user since version 4, but for some reason it seems to be getting worse with each new release. I just downloaded Wary 5.3 for my Dell Latitude E6520. Network setup does not recognize any network drivers, not wireless or wired. All versions before on other machines worked seamlessly, but this was seems broken. Running network wizard does not work. The drivers are not in the list. I have run Mint on this machine and it recognized all the drivers immediately. I have always preferred Puppy's interface to Mint or Ubuntu, but this is really frustrating. Why won't it find the drivers?

The wireless driver on my machine is MS virtual wifi miniport.

It could be that the drivers were not included in the build of Wary 5.3.
If you are lucky, you may be able to find another version of Puppy with the same kernel that you can rob the drivers from or do a search of the forum for the drivers specific to your pc.
Not knowing what drivers you require, does not help.
You might post a request for the drivers to support your network cards, being sure to specify the make and model`of them.

Interesting.
I too would like to know how to go about this. I can access the internet on Wary from a couple of older PC's, but not from my Acer Aspire laptop. I'm not very computer savvy, so I have a few basic questions:
1. How do I detirmine what drivers I need?
2. How do I tell what kernel the Puppy uses?
3. How do I "steal" the drivers?

Thanks,
Les

1. How do I detirmine what drivers I need?
Do a "lspc i-n" in terminal are follow this link. http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/

2. How do I tell what kernel the Puppy uses?
"uname-r" in terminal.

3. How do I "steal" the drivers?
Most likely you just need the "firmware", its just a copy and past! into the correct folder

Just a simple lspci -n output posted here would most likely get you help!

Well, that was a major fail. I did finally find an inf file on my windows 7 machine. It was NETwNs32.inf, loaded it, but Pup says it failed.

Ok, so I followed that link, which appears to be a really cool site, and all I need to do is paste the results of lspci -n into the appropriate place, and it will tell me what I need.

I opened the terminal and did the lspci -n thing, which resulted in a nice page of what appears to be hex code or some such. So far, so good.

Trouble is, I cannot figure out how to copy and paste that data.

I am typing this from Slacko 533 in Seamonkey on an Acer Laptop that has a touchpad, not a normal mouse.
Any help will be appreciated,
Les

OK, I'm embarrassed now. I switched to Slacko 5.3 and it recognized my hardware right off. Still not sure what the problem was with Wary, but Slacko is fine.

Yes, Slacko has this delightful habit of hassle-free connecting to networks. But it doesn't have drivers for some older stuff, and Wary doesn't have drivers for some newer stuff. I'm trying to learn more about Puppy, and how to do these little tricks will make things more handy in the future.

Wary and Slacko are made to support different age hardware.
Wary older hardware.
Slacko newer hardware.

The line between newer and older is not in stone, so mileage will very.

There is a lot of under the hood differences to accomplish this support.
Linux, in general, started dropping support for older hardware, so Wary was Puppies answer to still provide support.

Keeping a operating system around 130MB, compared to 3+GB in size, has to have some version options.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Something like this?

168c002e Yes Atheros Communications Inc. AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) ath9k v2.6.32-
80862c62 Intel Corporation Core Processor QuickPath Architecture Generic Non-core Registers

80862d11 Intel Corporation Core Processor QPI Physical 0
80862d12 Intel Corporation Core Processor Reserved
80862d13 Intel Corporation Core Processor Reserved

I'm not quite sure how to interpret this, or how to proceed from here. It appears that this machine needs an ethernet driver called "tg3" and a wireless driver called "ath9k". Does that seem correct?

Where would I look for the drivers so I could "steal" them to try to install them into Wary?
Thanks for the help,
Les
