Spoiled by speed
had 2 finally boot windows 8 on my PC. It was so slow I thought broke it some how. I wish device manufacturers would make Linux tools for the Android Linux devices the device is backed up now so back to fast 631

You can translate using my latest momanager from:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=141
..or staying with English: just hunt for bugs in these scripts.
There is a internationalized version of hardinfo:
http://bkhome.org/blog2/?viewDetailed=00089
But compilijng this is a bit beyond my scope at the moment.

Security issue-No hashing algorithm used to store passwords
In Fatdog64 just the first 8 characters of the password are taken in consideration when you set a password, I noticed that when I tried to set a longer password.
No hashing algorithms are used for storing passwords (including root password) in this distro. Fatdog64 use for storing the passwords just a weak DES encryption. The vulnerability of not using hashes for password storing was eliminated from most of linux distros more than 10 years ago.
An 8 character password may be cracked in minutes so running as spot user offer very weak security. Becoming a root from spot is an easy task for a modern hacker. I don't know if other puppy distros have the same problem, I will test setting a password on other distros in the future.
I hope that developers and the puppy community can help in solving this issue.
Anyway, great work, it's a fantastic distro.
Thanks!

laurentius77,
Most of that is incorrect, except for the 8 character limit. The passwords are md5 hashed and salted. You can see Busybox's FAQ here: http://www.busybox.net/FAQ.html#tips_en ... _passwords I think 8 characters gives you about 6 quadrillion possible passwords. So it is doable, but not for any computer I own
chapchap70,
There was some changes that might have caused a few seconds difference in boot time, but not that much. At least that I can think of. The initrd will be bigger for 630, so with slow media it could make a difference.
We've decided to go with Linux-3.12 so there will be a RC2 in a couple weeks. I think Mesa-10 will be out in a couple weeks too, so maybe that too along with the other video drivers. We've got some other changes in the works too.

"Password fields in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow are in a special format. If the first character isn't '$', then it's an old DES style password"
Then I came back to my Fatdog, I opened /etc/shadow where I have these lines:
root:APfT7BGPfjIhA0:99999:7:::
daemon:!0:99999:7:::
nobody:!0:99999:7:::
spot:!0:99999:7:::

haldaemon::0:99999:7:::
uucp::0:99999:7:::
sshd:*:9797:0:::::
webuser:!0:99999:7:::
From my understanding the password is not md5 hashed and salted. Tell me if I am wrong.
Is it the password limited to maximum 8 characters in busybox? Or this can be changed? In case if my root password is not md5 hashed, how can I force to use password hashing?
Thank you.
No, the default for root is:Then I came back to my Fatdog, I opened /etc/shadow where I have these lines:

If you changed the root password, the default for passwd is to use des, to use md5 type:

Hi @L18L
Might need to bring this to @Kirk's attention for a PET for FATDOG6xx+
Send him a PM
As I remember, @Kirk made some advances in Hardinfo that is used in current distro. Also, he addressed some missing reporting components in Hardinfo as it relates to FATDOG over the years, as well.You wrote: ... There is a internationalized version of hardinfo:

Audio does not function
No sound, on Fat Dog 530-RC1 with the Realtek® ALC892 chipset on an Asus Saber-tooth main board (Z77)
Spec's here :
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/SABERT ... ifications
I would be more than happy to post any logs, or perform any trouble shooting steps needed
(I already made sure the mixer levels were at their maximum in alsa-mixer)
Thanks!

Yes, by default it is not hashed and salted.laurentius77 wrote:From my understanding the password is not md5 hashed and salted. Tell me if I am wrong.
Only if you use the default DES-encrypted password.Is it the password limited to maximum 8 characters in busybox?
The 8-character limit for DES password cannot be changed, but password length is unlimited if you use either MD5 or SHA hashed passwords.Or this can be changed?
use passwd -a md5 or passwod -a sha to enable either md5 or sha hashing. Please make sure to have a backup savefile in case you're locked out.In case if my root password is not md5 hashed, how can I force to use password hashing?

I already enabled sha-256 hashing for my root password and it is true, the number of characters is unlimited using this option. Now I'm very ok with this but now I have a new issue. I tried to "merge" fd64-devx.sfs with fd64-630.sfs and rebuild initrd. The resulted .sfs ie about 600MB and is 2GB expanded but when I try to boot using this initrd I get the error "not enough memory to load specified image". My laptop has 4GB RAM memory so I expected to have enough memory to expand initrd but probably there is something that I miss.
I want this because having an "only in RAM" distro that includes devx.sfs is the perfect way to compile applications that I can use in this distribution.
Is there a way to get a "reduced" devx.sfs because the actual is pretty huge.
Also the distribution is pretty big, is there a way to create a barebone fd64?
Maybe someone have a woof-ce for this distro, I'm also interested in this.
Thank you again for your support.
pBurn432 failure in Fatdog630
PBurn432 PET was installed into FATDOG630. pBurn432 fails to start to desktop (console log below shows
- pBurn dependency check. Missing a dependency
- when pBurn started from terminal the desktop pBurn screen displays SIMULTANEOUSLY with a "killed" message on the terminal
- After hitting x (upper right corner) to close, the terminal windows goes in to a never-ending loop with the following message.

DPI and font size
A little confused, I have FD630 from aarnet.edu.au and I have Avidemux and default screen dpi is still at 78. I always take my dpi up to 96 and this makes the buttons, for Local News, Politics, Opinion ect. on the news papers I read overlap each other. I generally dont do alpha's ect. but I wanted to see what the new screen size looked like and if it would fix the buttons thing.
While here how can I make my borders and grab handles for windows bigggger, what do I edit with Geany to do that. Also the popup window for renaming something is to sht, how can I make it looonger to include the full name of the folder whatever that I want to rename. When hovering the mouse on a link, the full path of the link is not shown, can that be fixed. Aung

Haven't had that. It's probably a kernel/boot loader/BIOS/UEFI limitation.I get the error "not enough memory to load specified image".
Only by manually removing things and then recreating the sfs.is there a way to create a barebone fd64?
You have an old save file being used. Remove old save file or boot with savefile=none.I have FD630 from aarnet.edu.au and I have Avidemux and default screen dpi is still at 78.
Also, If I don't respond to a post it usually means I have nothing of value to add, at least at the moment. So please don't take offense. Thanks to everyone for testing. The next RC will be in a couple weeks. In retrospect we probably should have called this release a beta because we've now decided to change quite a few things. The next release will have a 3.12.x kernel with squashfs parallel decompression patches and user namespaces enabled. A new panel, Mesa-10 and new video drivers and some other things still in the works.
