Want Explorer-type File Manager for Precise Puppy 5.7.1
My direct experience with Puppy/Linux can be counted in hours on one hand although I've spent a lot of google time...
Like many newbies, I'm not relating well to ROX-filer although the rest seems fine so far. I want a 2 pane file manager much like Win Explorer for Puppy. I've googled and found that Thunar or XFE are possibles, but then I've seen that there have been problems with Thunar on Precise Puppy - so I'm getting lost. I will not have web access with Puppy, so I need to download (a PET?) separately. Requesting help with version & download site. From what I've read, I believe I should install with the PPM, correct?
My purpose at this point is to use Puppy as an toolkit on a flashdrive to fix Windows drives, so I want to use familiar mouse & keyboard operations to help minimize risk.

spacefm or pcman look okay to you?
you can grab the pets for them here. for 5.7.1, any of the pets there for either will work. use the lower numbered thunar, that works fine as well. the double commander one is also okay. personally, i could never get all the features of xfe to work well (and/or seem intuitive or natural) and recommend spacefm as it reminds me of a file manager i used to like for windows that was forty bucks or something.
(previous "here" led nowhere. now fixed.)

Earlier went to Advanced/Additional Software & found Thunar, but that's also where I saw it had problems with Precise, so don't know where to get it.
sorry about that--will check to see what went wrong...
this work?
the only thunar i know of to have a problem with precise is the 1.6.2 pet. the other one (1.0.2, which you should now hopefully be able to access) works fine.

Hi,
Here is another option in case you would like to try xfe, this is a zip file of xfe 1.32.4, its the file manager I use in puppy precise 5.7.1
The zip file is 3.3MB and includes the dependencies libfox-1.6-0_1.6.44-1.1ubuntu2_i386.deb and libtiff4_3.9.5-2ubuntu1.5_i386.deb , both are required in puppy precise 5.7.1 for xfe to run.
Also included is the theme pack, xfe-themes_1.32.4-3_all.deb and a .pet file to turn xfe into the default file manager, (these two are optional items though the theme pack is highly recommended)
The .deb files were downloaded with puppy package manager.
The .pet file to turn xfe into the default file manager came from this forum.
These all can be installed with petget, it handles .deb files as well as .pet files. Petget is actually just the puppy package manager. Included in the zip is info.txt with the order to install the files.

Whichever file manager you choose, remember you should not uninstall ROX as puppy is built around it.

Yes, I know, but it's good to mention. And I think it's probably worth while knowing the basics of ROX-filer. Just don't want to use it as my primary.Whichever file manager you choose, remember you should not uninstall ROX as puppy is built around it.
Did download xfe, perdido.
Puppus Dogfellow, I downloaded Thunar 1.0.2 from your link and 3 spacefm files; usage of the plugins? One spacefm a better bet than the other?
Will try Thunar first because it's supposed to be lite, but it's great to have a couple of options.
Thanks to both of you.

plugins not necessary--i just included them for those that want them (unpack and point the program to it via the menu). all the file managers discussed here are light and quick. anyway, both will work, may as well use the newer package (actually from carolina puppy, but works in precise 55, 56, 57...). to be honest, i see no difference between the seven and eight series...dianedebuda wrote:Yes, I know, but it's good to mention. Re: Want Explorer-type File Manager for Precise Puppy 5.7.1
There is a precise puppy already set up for windows repair, might be worth a look. Note that there is a PAE and non-PAE version, if booting these on broken systems it would be good to have both available.dianedebuda wrote:

Going to take a look at it. Thread mentions another File Manager (icewm), so there's yet another for me to check out. Thanks for the heads-up.There is a precise puppy already set up for windows repair
Fortunately, my win HDD "fixes" are usually just limited to resizing C partitions, checking folder/file structures, and copying user files before restores with standalone Acronis WD - nothing too exotic. Have a standalone AVG for virus repair, but the way my web boxes are set up, it's just as easy to do a full restore since I don't "do" anything with those boxes except browse, (web) email & download.
Somewhat OT, but how often should I expect updates to Puppy now? Think I read founder Barry has retired and things have switched to maint mode for a while. Of particular interest to me is if/when I'd see Precise support for newish Asus mb (F2A85-V Pro & F2A85-M Pro mentioned in another recent thread) that don't work with current Precise but do work with Mint & FatDog.
Hi, may I correct, IceWM it's not a file manager, it's a (very nice and recomendable) Window Manager.dianedebuda wrote: Thread mentions another File Manager (icewm), so there's yet another for me to check out. Thanks for the heads-up.

It gives you the windows decorations, the task bar, and so on.
It's one of the first things I install in a new Puppy. There are a lot of different themes.http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=20702
By the way, ROX it's a bit different of what we are used to, but if you play a little with it, you'll find it very handy. Just open two instances, source and destination. Again play a little with ROX options and find its advantages.
Bye.
