When the machine posts, I hit F12 key and ensure my boot menu is set to "Removable Device"...
The machine boots into Windows XP. WTF?! "

You need to look at the hard drives boot order first.
Move the hard drive down....and the USB to the top.
Then save the settings....usually >> F10
Try different usb ports as well.

" Yeah mate I've done just that with my Toshiba Satellite A70.
A good old bomb.
Running Linux Mint 14 sweet - off USB bootable!
Use UNetbootin to burn your ISO file on the USB,
then plug in your USB and hit F2 for BIOS settings on reboot.
Go to Boot tab and press Enter to expand the Hard Drives list,
where you'll find your USB stick.
Use F6 to shift it to the top of the list and CRANK IT UP! Cheers! "

Thanks for the kind reply!
It is a HP computer. I do not know what kind of motherboard right now. How do I check?
The above link seems nice. I found a USB installer that works for Puppy 4.3.1.
I think I could just download that version and see if it will boot.. =))
Many users are using the 4.3.1 version so that would be a nice choice, right?

Installation complete
It installed with no problems.
The only difficult thing was to press the ESC button while the computer starts - to enter the BOOT menu... =)
I also needed to know the vertical and horizontal frequenzy ranges for the monitor, but that was possibly to "google up".
Thanks for the support guys!!!!!

XP is back..... =(
Now something really annoying happened.. I turned the computer off, and the next time I turned it on the XP system jumped back on... Frustrating. Why did the puppy not stay on my computer???
Timgri, are you trying to install Puppy in the computer so you don't need the USB flash drive any more, or do you want to always run Puppy from the USB flash drive and leave what's in the computer alone?
If you're trying to install Puppy in the computer, do you want to get rid of Windows and replace it with Puppy, or do you want to keep Windows and be able to run Puppy when you want?

Re: Installation complete
Setting the USB Puppy to boot from the boot menu only works that one time, for that session. If you want the computer to automatically boot from a USB drive each and every time it's plugged in, you must change the order in which the BIOS looks for something to boot from - by, instead, accessing the BIOS settings at startup and changing the order from there (putting USB first in line). You'll have to press some other key during startup to access BIOS - that key being specific to the make/model of your computer (search Google or your owners manual for which key that is - often f2, f8, f10, etc).timgri wrote: The only difficult thing was to press the ESC button while the computer starts - to enter the BOOT menu...
Here's a tutorial - don't worry, it's actually very easy...
http://www.howtogeek.com/129815/beginne ... ters-bios/
That way, if your Puppy USB stick is plugged in, it'll boot straight to Puppy. If next time the USB is not plugged in, it'll boot normally to XP (or a CD/DVD, if set in that order and a bootable CD/DVD is in the drive tray).

I suggest you should try to use the latest Puppy which is Slacko 5.7 rather than 4.3.1 which is quite old now. Download the .iso and burn it (as an image, not a copy) to a CD as your first step. Hopefully you have a CD burner that works and a blank CD or CD-RW.timgri wrote:So what I want to do is INSTALL puppy
Once you have booted Puppy (from a CD or from USB) you have to use the tools found within the menu in Puppy. Gparted will wipe Windows and format the hard disc. Puppy Universal Installer will then install Puppy. You then also need to run one of the Grub config programs to install and set up your bootloader.

But is it really wise to get rid of the only working OS
instead of having Puppy installed on an USB and to
learn much using it before you decide on
doing frugal install or full install of the HD can
be problem with drivers of Printer/ scanners and other gear
But as my name imply. I am a noob trust me on that
so listen to the wise guys. I disagree with some of them obviously
but I would keep the win OS until I have set up Puppy as I want to
then less hassle when you know what programs you prefer.

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

A former workmade and his old buddy from school times
did just that. Wipe the Win-xp against my suggstion to not do it.
Guess what did happen? They failed to find the needed drivers
because they did not new he nameas of those for that
Computer Motherboard.
Do it could be wise to first learn about the HW using USB
and see or find out how well that works with Graphic cards
and with access to internet.
Just a friendly thought.

If you are not bothered about keeping XP, do what I do on a regular basis.
Start Puppy from the CD/USB (Any version)
Find Gparted (Could be in a couple of places depending on the Puppy).
Delete the hard drive partition,
Create a new partition and format it (I usually use ext2)
Install Puppy
Others will have different and possibly simpler ideas' but this works for me.
