That's exactly what I'm having. I didn't understand why.
An interesting note I think - It started today. Yesterday I was able to connect my dad's account; today I couldn't. So I disconnected my Skype on Puppy, on my computer; and couldn't connect to my dad's account; and then later to mine. So before I disconnected - I was connected with the old version of Skype - 4.2. Maybe it's a loophole.

If it turns out indeed that older versions of Skype do not work (cannot log in) anymore, I can see a lot of problems on the horizon for system developers. Many users will definitely want Skype capable systems, which would then mean systems will need Pulse Audio installed and correctly set up by default.
Whilst there may be other apps that can do much of what Skype does, the problem is really that Skype is used by a lot of people, so as with Facebook with its huge userbase, it is difficult not to be part of the Skype community. I know for sure that my partner needs Skype, for both personal contacts and work-related business use reasons.
In many ways, Pulse Audio may be very useful, but configuration-wise I imagine it will involve a lot of changes, and I wonder what the overhead will be in terms of resources, including CPU. I suppose we just have to try it and see...

Yesterday I had troubles connecting with Skype 2.2 but deleting /root/.Skype folder fixed this. Today I confirm I can't login with Skype 2.2 or 4.2.0.11 and 4.2.0.13. Let's hope someone will find a way to fix this. I'm sure there will be a lot of new threads opened about this.mcewanw wrote:I've read somewhere that these older versions of Skype can no longer login. That seems to be the case on a quick try today. Can you verify, they no longer work?
Message from Skype community forum:

Seems like we are forced to use latest or nothing.
Skype 4.3 can't work on my daily use machine and I say good bye to Skype.
Edit: I can login with Skype 2.2 after few failed to connect messages by closing Skype and deleting /root/.Skype folder and starting Skype again. let's say it works once every five-six attempts. But I can't do the same with Skype 4.2.

Hi, I installed DebianDog and worked very nicely with my hardware (at first glance). Then I noticed my cooling fan making more noise than usual so I already suspected the kernel wasn' t supporting multi-core CPUs
I have read the instructions to change to another kernel, but to be honest it seemed easier to try out another puppy that had SMP support out of the box.
I will keep an eye on this puppy though, I like that it is based on debian and seemed to work very well (probably used it for a couple of hours)

If you still like to try SMP kernel here is even simpler method:Tm_mT wrote:Hi, I installed DebianDog and worked...
1. Download this archive and move it inside /live folder where 01-filesystem.squashfs, vmlinuz, initrd.img etc are located:
http://smokey01.com/saintless/DebianDog ... Pae.tar.gz
2. Extract the archive.
3. Delete (or move in different folder) /live/vmlinuz1, /live/initrd.img, /live/initrd1.img, /live/initrd1.xz
4. Rename /live/vmlinuz6 to /live/vmlinuz1
/live/initrd61.img to /live/initrd.img
/live/initrd62.img to /live/initrd1.img
/live/initrd63.xz to /live/initrd1.xz
5. Reboot DebianDog without changing anything in menu.list (but do not use Copy to RAM boot yet).
If you decide to try and you like the result I will post simple instruction how to remaster DebianDog by removing the old kernel and using the new one. It is easier than you can imagine
Toni
Thanks for those instructions. Indeed doesn't seem very difficult.
That said, I already installed TahrPup and I am also pleased
with that one.
My post was just to let you know that why I decided to try another puppy.
I am sure lots of folks will just use it once, have issues and
never report what their issue was.
e.g. I have tried more Puppies but didn't bother to investigate or report for:
Fatdog - my wired internet stopped working after a few minutes
Slacko - worked very nicely but I need to install Mono and Mono-dev and the slackware repo didn't have that.
Then I tried DebianDog and it worked like a charm, installed Mono + -dev and only the kernel part was preventing me from a frugal install.
After that I tried TahrPup and it basically works for me so I think I will use that Puppy for a while.
Installing a new Puppy is so easy and fun, that is why installing another one if there is even a minor issue is so tempting. Certainly because I haven't invested
a lot of time tweaking any of them to my liking.
Installing and keep using it are two different things though.
I have no idea how stable TahrPup is - will I run into dependency issues - how well is it supported etc etc. No way to tell if that will be my next distro for a longer period.
Usually I change from Puppy to a major distro after a couple of weeks of pleasant use. I love Puppy but until now I always ran into limitations (usually not being able to install
a certain software package) after a while.
Having the Debian (or Ubuntu) repository available is a major advantage of DebianDog and TahrPuppy. As I already mentioned
I will certainly keep an eye on DebianDog and report back if I have tried it and then I will share my experiences installing the SMP kernel

Puppy is great distro and I also use KDPup often.
Just keep in mind DebianDog is not Puppy. It is Debian-Wheezy Live CD with added extra functions similar to Puppy. You can make Full install and get Debian Wheezy with Jwm or OpenBox desktop that can be changed in no time to standard Gnome or KDE or upgarded to Jessie or SID.

Edit: Does not work anymore. Here is new workaround:

For anyone using Skype 2.1 and Skype 2.2:
Starting skype with this script works for me every time to login.
Name it start-skype for example:
Move it in /opt/bin and type start-skype in terminal. Make sure to quit Skype before running start-skype again. Logout is not enough.
This doesn't work for Skype 4.2

Sorry, I misunderstood, what is it that you need, change system locale to Hebrew then?MrAccident wrote:I don't want the browser to be in Hebrew; I just want it to be able to save files into folders with the name in Hebrew. It always worked with the English version.
I experimented with that and got result showing on picture below (not perfect because it's mixed english/hebrew)

Fred - that's not it either. It's very simple - to be able to download files to a folder that has a name in Hebrew. It's not really important; I can do without, for now. Right now DebianDog is on my dad's computer. He hardly needs anything; though Skype is one of the things. :-/
It should work with the English version of FireFox; I think it always worked.I just hope that isn't a symptom for more problems.
Is there a way to have conformation for file deletion in the file-manager?
Anyway - thank you all for the help so far!

Tested on my laptop with Skype 4.3.0.37 and this optional checkbox is on the bottom right login window (where you type username and password).MrAccident wrote:I didn't find a way to make Skype log-in automatically when I start it; Is this option gone?
Just for information you need to install pulseausio and type pulseaudio --start in terminal (there will be message you should not run it as root but it works anyway). After that run Skype and you should have audio and internal microphone working. Works also for user account puppy.
Haven't tested the camera with external microphone. I guess some settings will be needed in pulseaudio about the microphone in such case.
I can't find what prevents this latest skype work on my other hardware yet.

How to login with Skype 4.0.0.8 downloaded from here:

You will need also Skype 2.2 binary in case you need to create new account. More information here:

Interesting - thanks for that info, I thought this was a "Woof-like" Puppy. Hmm.. I think am going to invest a bit more time in this onesaintless wrote: Just keep in mind DebianDog is not Puppy. WOW, thanks, that is a workaround! Great find, Toni.Toni wrote:How to login with Skype 4.0.0.8 downloaded from here:

At first I tried with the 2.2.0.35-new sfs but somehow couldn't get it to work.
To summarize: (I did slightly different)
What I did to make it work was adding the old skype repo to sources.list:
Code: Select all
echo "deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
Code: Select all
apt-get update
apt-get install skype
skype
Enter username and password and check "login when skype starts" (or something like that).
It may take a while to start skype then.
- Close skype by "quit" from rightclicking on icon in systray.
- Start skype again to check if it logs in automatically.
- Close skype again by "quit" from rightclicking on icon in systray.
Now if you'd like to upgrade to version 4.2: to download and install along with dependencies:
Code: Select all
wget http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-ubuntu-precise_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb
dpkg -i skype-ubuntu-precise_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb
apt-get -f install
skype
Make sure not to log out (it won't reconnect then anymore)
Fred
Hi, Fred
Thanks for testing with 4.2.0.11. My post example is for Puppy linux users. I also test only with deb packages.
I'm almost ready with SFS that has Skype-4.0.0.8 + Skype-2.2.0.35 with menu entry and start and use instruction. Having Skype-2.2 binary included fixes logout mistake any time you need. It is mostly for my old hardware but i guess it will be useful for other DebianDog users.
I need to test it in OpenBox version and the sfs will be uploaded soon.
My laptop is dead. I couldn't start it today and I can't do more tests with Skype-4.3 but it worked long enough to help me find workaround for older skype.
Later we can make Skype-4.0.13 + 2.2 sfs for DebianDog.
