Which wireless usb adapters work well in Slacko 5.7.0?

#1 Post by jaywalker52 »

First of all I'm a brand new newbie with limited computer skills. I'm running Slacko 5.7.0 on a Dell Optiplex 755. I have no ethernet available and there is no room in my small form case to put a wireless card so I'm using a TP-Link, model TL-WN822N wireless USB adapter version 3.0, rtl8192cu chipset. I can with some difficulty get it connected but it drops out. Sometimes it won't be recognized and other times it will. I'm assuming there is some sort of driver problem but before I get too deep into that I was wondering if there are any known, out of the box, good wireless USB adapters that work well with Slacko 5.7.0?

I own this adapter. I have used it in Slacko 56 with the PWF network manager. It connects every time and I have never seen it drop out.

Thanks. I'll try that. I had read on another thread that version 3 had some difficult with Linux.

Please note my recommendation of Slacko56. Slacko57 has some problems with WiFi drivers that may be contributing to your situation.

Please report back with the results.

Thanks. I'm going to try what you mentioned with 5.7.0 and also may try Slacko 56 as you recommend. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

I can't find the PeasyWiFi in either the tray or Network menu. Can't find it in packages either. I've tried both Slacko 5.6 and 5.7.

TP Link TP WN725N works with Slacko. That's going to be a limited-use recommendation though. Because it doesn't work out of the box with many other puppies. Slacko had some disagreements with the graphics resolution, so I didn't end up using it on that machine. But it did work, initially :)

It's a PET package that you must install yourself. There is an attachment at the end of the PWF post I linked to above.

Save the peasywifi-3.3.pet onto a flash drive.

Boot Puppy off its CD.

Mount the flash drive.

Install the PET by single-clicking on it.

Okay, I've installed PWF on Slacko 56 and still not having much luck. I'm following your in depth directions for PWF. This is what I get after step 4) : "interface wlano is NOT active; Kernel module: rtl8192cu ; Firmware: rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin ; WPA Supplicant: NOT running. In step 5) Access points are identified including my own. In step 6d) Details after scan show both WPA and WPA2 (I have tried both). In step 7) I have tried connecting a number of times. Most times it won't connect. A few times it does connect but just briefly. I then click status it will show an IP address of 169.254.169.22. I then click "disconnect" and reboot (per your instructions). It is removed but the next time it connects it puts it right back on. I'm stumped at this point. I'm wondering if the driver is correct. The adapter I'm using is version 3.0.

This is the correct driver. My TL-WN822N is also v3.0.

Because you have now seen problems with different connection managers, this would suggest some hardware incompatibility, possibly with your wireless router.

If this was a laptop, I would suggest that you take it somewhere and connect to a public AP.

Do you have another machine on which you can boot Puppy and try the adapter?

I have a pretty high end LincSys router and this adapter works quite well on this same machine when I'm using with windows 8.1 (no connection problems, never any dropouts). I have a laptop that is already using Slacko 57 but it has an onboard wireless card.

Try plugging the adapter into a different USB port.

Okay, I'll try that. Probably tomorrow. Thanks!

I moved the adapter to a different usb port and that made no difference. I then did a clean install of Slacko 56 and got it to connect most of the time but after a few minutes it would drop out, sometimes come back. It was giving me my router ip address but finally it gave me the bogus ip again. I checked 'details' after some scans and sometimes it would read signal strength 70/70 = 10 dbs but other times 69/70 =-40 dbs. I'm thinking it has to be software problem because I am typing this right now on the exact same hardware set-up in Windows. Everything working great, fast and no dropouts.

Like I said before, my experience with this adapter has been the opposite. However, here is little utility that may help to keep your connection up.

If you are just booting off the CD with no savefile, you will need v1.2 that starts running immediately.

Thanks. I'll try it. By the way, I see the puppy face connection icon in the tray turning from white to green. What does that indicate?

Are you talking about the "blinky" tray applet? The green colour usually indicates that some data transfer is happening.

I tried your utility and it may have helped a bit, but still doing much the same thing. I'm throwing my hands up in the air for now, but I sure appreciate your help. It's my son's computer and I'll revert back to windows for now. I'm going to have to upgrade the video card anyway, when he tries to install minecraft it can't do the render process. Again, thanks. I learned a lot regardless.
