Macro recoders for Linux & a great resource website! :)

#1 Post by jhecht »

I've used macro recorders for years, and they save me hours of repetitive typing. You create a macro to do - well, almost anything, and then assign it a hotkey. I never type my email address, my forum signature, my resume, (macros can be large), and about 40(!) other recurring typing tasks. This is on a Win 7 desktop, which is my main biz computer. I use a program I found called the Jitbit Macro Recorder - works fantastically well, ultra fast!
URL is: https://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/. Cost is $39/1 yr. Worth it and a lot more IMO.

Then I thought that there might be an equivalent alternative program for Linux, and a lucky Google got me: http://alternativeto.net/. This is an amazing resource site. It serves Windows/Mac/Linux/iPhone/Android, and 40-some other platforms/programs.

If you like a specific program in Windows, type in the program name, and you get equivalents for all the other platforms. Works the other way around too. Type a Linux program name, and get Win/Mac/Linux alternatives. Some are freeware, some commercial, many, many choices, all good.

Enjoy this outstanding resource! :)

Update: Even more good Linux options with this Google search:

At $39/yr what is the killer feature compared to the free alternatives?

Perhaps none, but I found Jitbit >before< I found the free ones, and needed something immediately to replace QuicKeys, so I bought it. It also is very fast, and never crashes. I offer the URLs for both Jitbit and free alternatives as information. You get to choose what alternative(s) you want to explore. Please report your results back here for other users?

And the $39 is for lifetime use - Jitbit never times out. It's the ability to get updates that you pay for. You could easily buy it, and use it for several years before having to re-up.

So you can get equivalents in >Linux< for Win programs you find useful, and visa-versa. Ditto for Macintosh. Clear now?

Maybe >you< never use Win computers, I am forced to use Win, Mac and Linux. I think that's true for many people here. The site http://alternativeto.net/ supports all three platforms and many more. It plainly says that in my post.

Did you bother to explore the site before commenting?

What is spam about available macro programs (both free and commercial) that work on Win, Mac, >and< Linux? Why do you consider that spam? Have you ever used a macro program? They save enormous amounts of time. Why don't you try one? It might open your mind just a wee bit...

And http://alternativeto.net/ is a fantastic resource for >all< computer users - if you'd bother to look at it.
