System doesn't keep the wireless settings

#1 Post by disallowed »

Every time I boot, I have to activate network interface and type password to connect with wifi. Why it doesn't "remember" these settings and information and I have always to do this work?

Mine does with no problems. Is your Puppy up to date?
What tool are you using?

The last time I used Barry's SNS. I rebooted and now there's no problem. I'm afraid I hurried too much to start this thread. Sorry.

That's OK.

There were problems at one time with connecting, that was why I asked which version.

Tomorrow I came to the parental home and I couldn't connect all day. Neither ethernet nor wifi. It got me a "network fail" message. I did a fresh install of OS and the problem remained. Now I connect normally.

In the past (on Ubuntu) I had problems of delaying until being connected every time I was moving to another house, too. But I find it strange that the yesterday's problem remained after re-installing OS.

At this moment I can't connect with ethernet, I get the message:

Code: Select all

failed to connect to wired network eth0
the network does exist, however failed to negotiate with the dhcp server
is there a wireless interface? -- maybe try that
I can't connect with laptop wireless too:

Code: Select all

fail to activate interface eth1
sometimes this is just a temporary problem
go back to the main window and you can try again
I connect only with a usb wireless adaptor.

If you are going to try to set it up again, before you start your new configuration, load each profile you had previously created and delete it until the only profile to choose from is autoconnect.
Otherwise, the old profiles can create problems for you.

I deleted profiles, chose wireless interface and got again:

Code: Select all

fail to activate interface eth1
sometimes this is just a temporary problem
go back to the main window and you can try again

At Network Information => Wireless:

Code: Select all

Wireless configuration:

No wireless extensions detected.

Use the Internet Cnxn Manager in MENU. Having both eth0 and wlan0 cnxns is problematic in some distros like Slacko5.7. For eth0 use SNS, for wlan0 Frisbee. One of the problems is puppy's INSISTANCE on a cnxn at boot-up. This spawns all problems IMHO because the last cnxn used is reconnected, or attempted regardless of end-user wishes. Rather condescending and unnecessisary. There should be a flag for reboots during updates/repairs to allow autoconnect. The default should be no cnxn.
