I have been trying out several linux distros including Puppy from the live CDs.
Since doing this, I have had a couple of problems with XP:
My thumb drive with stored data was wiped out and required reformating.
The computer will no longer do a restart when I log out of XP.
I can't correct the lost data on the thumb drive, but I would like to regain the restart function with the computer using XP.
Does anyone have any idea how I could correct this?
Thanks for the help.

Offhand, it's hard to say what's causing that. Perhaps your boot loader could use a repair?

You can grab a copy of the Recovery Console here.

Will it reboot into safe-mode?

Yes, it will restart if in safemode.Semme wrote:Will it reboot into safe-mode?
I think I have figured out the problem. I updated a program called Dsynchronize. If it is set to auto start when XP starts, then it creates this problem.
I will need to contact the developer about this bug with the updated version.
Thanks for you help. The articles that you recommended lead me to look in the right direction. It wasn't Linux that cause this problem after all.
Yes booting into live CD can cause problems people do not expect, but if you added a savefile end on a perfectly good harddrive and a piece of code that expected or count on the OS files to be identical from last shutdown ( like win8 ) can go haywire, on win8 it will eat itself up and commit OS-aside ( OS killing itself ) if filesystem is even read touched, It has almost certainty to kill its self if you mounted and wrote a file to it.
So you are now lucky to learn a lesson on poor ME only developed software with XP. Win8 ha ha expects its the only thing in existence and nothing changes outside of itself.
