As noted on the stardust thread, some of the icons in the upper bar disappear when the green background color is selected. It may be possible to outline the icons with a contrasting color (as subtitles are done now days).

The widget analog clock never displayed.

Also, is it possible to add different backgrounds to the different desktops? I get lost sometimes.
the icons and clock are probably issues with the stardust installer - starting with pfix=ram is reported to fix the issues with the missing icons but the dim icons should be fixed with stardust 12

I can set up different backgrounds with jwm, but not rox AFAIK - so you could turn off pinboard support in the ROX options menu but you would also lose icons ... here is a thread for using jwm for multiple backgrounds and to hack some pseudo icons (via tray buttons)

I'd like to add this as an option if possible to reduce resources.

SSL support

#82 Post by Béèm »

I have a program which needs SSL.
As the program doesn't work, I suppose there is no SSL support in 4.4.
Would it be possible to add it or else indicate where to find?
(I looked in PPM, but didn't find it there with the search facility)

technosaurus,
On a previous page, I requested that you consider adding the capability to Mouse/Keyboard Settings in the Puppy Control Center, an option to turn the NumLock key on/off. I made the same request on the Stardust thread and zigbert wanted more information. My reply is here for your consideration also.
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the link. I see why it's not done now. It would be a bad trade. It would be a nice option though. Much appreciated.

adding sfs files with bootmanager

#85 Post by Béèm »

Just for information.

With success I added OOo 3.01, Wine 1.1.20 and pidgin 2.6.1 and can use the programs, included the programs installed in wine. I keep these wine programs outside the save file, so I can use them in any puppy I use.

So, just to put it out there I have done some testing of various email programs and the recently released Sylpheed-3.0.0 seemed excellent - better than Seamonkey mail in my opinion... I also tested Abiword's html capabilities and they are now comparable to Seamonkey composer. This should give us a net savings on space (~1-2MB) and provide better functionality via firefox and its addons.

I have been having some compatibility issues trying to get a working Firefox-3.6 maybe due to the updated cairo, but that is just speculation.

I have compiled hunspell which is what firefox uses for spell check (it can also --enable-system-hunspell for reduced size) and is also usable by enchant for abiword, ayttm and many other programs with spell check, and has the most international support (probably because open office uses it too)
... also the updated sqlite included should be sufficient for --with-system-sqlite and the png-1.2.40 library has been patch for apng (animated), so that should work as well .

I'll upload a compile of Sylpheed (and gtkspell) tonight, but would be interested in the config options or tricks/hacks to get a working Firefox-3.6 or info about the latest version that is stable on Puppy.

Altho I prefer suite type of programs, I downloaded the FF 3.6 tar.bz2 and installed in a directory outside my pupsave file.
I saw I had the missing libdus.... libraries and installed them.
After that FF did run. I didn't do extensive browsing.

In this way FF is available for other puppies as well.

All this has taken some 5 minutes.

I had used this way of installing already for SeaMonkey 2.0.3

As much as possible I try to use this way of installing.

I assume that you set up a Firefox directory at mnt/home. What links or changes are needed in the pupsave for it to be used properly?
Thanks,

posting from my previously compiled firefox-3.6 it turns out that the --enable-chrome-format=symlink caused the chrome directory to get borked so I unzipped the jar files from the official build as directories of the same name into the chrome directory and viola - it works as if I had --enable-chrome-format=flat (this will allow better theming and changes to the interface and we can do symlinks manually using rdfind)

./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --build=i486-t2-linux-gnu --enable-application=browser --enable-optimize=-Os --disable-update-channel --disable-update-packaging --disable-debug --disable-tests --enable-strip --with-system-jpeg --with-system-bz2 --with-system-png --with-system-zlib --enable-system-sqlite --enable-xul --disable-glibtest --enable-system-cairo --enable-system-hunspell --disable-accessibility --disable-crash-reporter --enable-chrome-format=symlink --disable-dbus --disable-libnotify --no-create --no-recursion

Note: /usr/lib/firefox-3.6/defaults/profile/bookmarks.html <<<contains the default bookmarks

Hi techn as FF3.6 goes why not use the default version, if its because of themes, you can rename the jar files to zip, and extract them, then change the images and zip the folders and rename to jar and it should be good, The latest default 3 series has been extremely fast & stable on 2.14X for over a year, plus it auto updates out of the box, saves compiling. Seamonkey used to be a pain all the time, users always wanted the latest version etc to be compiled. But Mozilla's precompiled Firefox on the other hand works out of the box on puppy with only 2 deps needed, dbus and dbus-glib.
also if your installing Firefox as default in this puppy, you'll have to fix Cups and actual printing on FF3 series is broke for some users, so luckily if you install this package below it will all be fixed. gtklp is what fixes when you replace lpr with the one included in this package.

Firefox-3.6 alas - 10MB pet
http://puppy-development.googlecode.com ... ox-3.6.pet
requires
http://puppy-development.googlecode.com ... 8-i486.pet
and possibly http://puppy-development.googlecode.com ... 8-i486.pet
but it seems to be running fine without it

I just had to cp -rL chrome/* to the chrome directory from the source tree in /dist/bin

I had the same problem with seamonkey-2 as well but never figured it out - for future reference NEVER use the symlink chrome option unless you are a developer building from the svn tree continuously

Sylpheed
is here:

Thanks ttuuxxx - unfortunately I cannot print from any version of Puppy to test... due to no printer, so I'll have to get some user feedback on that one.

I've been using Wolf Pup's Firefox pets in all my Puppy installations, excluding those that already have FF, and have had no problems since 4.30 was released. I have deleted my save file for 4.4 pre-alpha and installed the new FF 3.6 pet and in brief testing so far there have been no problems. Tried a few Youtube and other streaming videos and they played nice and smooth.

Guess I'll upgrade to the latest Flash and see if there is any change.

Looks like this is a good base for 4.4........ :)

why not go with something totally radical and use Dillo as the default.. lots of browser in the tiny core repo, easily installed... I'm using Icecat, with dbus and dbus glib as tcls>>>sfs (*people now take aim at micko...* )

I would rather stay with SeaMonkey as that was offered in the original that Puppy CE is based on.
Puppy CE to me at least is getting to look like a Stardust wannabe.
The implementation of auto-internet setup is good and works for me out of the box.
But if I want a Stardust look, I would just run Stardust.
If I want Firefox, I can install that.
So how about this for an idea.
Include a standalone web browser that can be removed and offer the option using Puppy Package Manager to install the browser the user chooses.
That should please those that want Seamonkey, Firefox, Chrome, etc.
If I made some upset with this comment, that happens.

I'm 100% for Firefox :) Seamonkey is like in everything you can shake a stick at, Opera I hate the upsidedown gui, dillo usually can't download pets from the forum or ibiblio. Midori usually isn't all that stable, Firefox has the best selection of plugins, is used by most linux users, really if you take all the Linux browsers add up all the users and compare Firefox to the rest, Firefox would have like 75% of the market, Its because it auto-updates almost weekly to combat security issues, its stable and finally 3 series is more stable than FF2 :)

Hi people, haven't tried 4.4 yet, is it same kernel and base as 4.3.1 ? Will look into changes but I'm posting regarding browsers.

Dillo is too basic in my opinion to go with, lacks features although it is neat if someone wants lightweight browser with not too much fat. But for default browser puppy needs some of mainstream browsers. I'm big fan of firefox and just like ttuuxxx I think opera has little different way of apeareance and integration of it's suite then users normally would expect. Seamonkey is okay I guess and somewhat lighter for resources then ff (not sure about 2.0 but 1.1.18 was really good on resources).

Seamonkey is probably good choice for default but I would personally always install firefox over that.

Bah!

Even more radical idea .... NO browser!!! ( )

Simple list of what browser you want... click, it installs.

Ok, ok, no browser is a bit too radical... dialup guys need something..., but something light with adblock... FF2??? Firepup??? Yes, I know.. old.. (*more cannons aimed at micko*)... but good. 8)

There is a vala browser based on webkit, I think gege had something to do with it..

Personally, I think flash is overrated. I hate flash videos. You are always at the mercy of the uplinks' speed  . The youtube downloader by trio is a neat get around. You can play flash without having flash, whether you have fast net or not. Would make us a bit gnuer too. (not a typo!)

Hmm.. maybe a new thread for this one as a browser is only a small (yet important) part of an OS.

Cheers
