Easy 0.2
I guess that I can post this under the Puppy Derivatives category, coz it is a descendant/branch/fork of Puppy. Yet very different in some ways.

It is best to read my How Easy Works page to get an idea how similar and different Easy is:
http://barryk.org/easy/how-easy-works.htm

I have been traveling, 6 weeks in India, got back about a week ago. As time allowed, worked on Easy Linux, however, it has been very stop-start.
Now that I am home, hope to get moving on it again.

If you feel like trying Easy, let me know your experiences.

Bear in mind that some aspects are immature, very pre-alpha. It may even turn out that some aspects are impractical or will need major changes.

I posted to my blog, with some install notes, and download link:

Aah you were in India?
Came anywhere near Pune, Maharashtra?
You missed Holi, festival of colors which was this week.

Anyway I will test Easy tomorrow.

Incredibly slow d/l from ally, still going after 30mins!
Started reading the BK how-to whilst waiting. Had to laugh: Easy Linux !
Almost as difficult as explaining DNA editing to a guy with a degree in Spanish Literature. Been working with computers over half-a-century but eyes started glazing over after l.16 or was it l.23 !
Never easy to talk shop to folks out of one's own loop....
And, just what is the issue about .iso and running as a liveCD? Doesn't get much simpler? If all else fails, that can be installed as FULL or Frugal to other media. Sounds simple to this simpleton.

Seems a lot snappier than Quirky Xerus, but maybe partly due to using a different usb stick. No problems so far.

If this OS can run both 32-bit and 64-bit programs, I'm definitely going to try it out!

Yeah, having a fast USB stick can make a huge difference.

Also, if 'q.sfs' got loaded into RAM at bootup, operation will be very snappy. Easy will do that if it decides there is enough RAM, or decides that the USB stick is very slow.
-- so you might be getting snappy performance even with a slow memory stick.

The kernel supports running both, but I have not included any 32-bit shared libs in the build. They would be available in the Ubuntu DEB repo though, I supposed.

Statically compiled 32-bit apps will run, since they don't need any shared libs.

She's running pretty good on my old Dell. A few quick notes and a few questions I hope you can help with (maybe unrelated to Easy):

1. Disappointed in the look... where's the glaring green or obnoxious orange? (kidding of course)...

2. It could be my imagination but looks like Seamonkey (container version) boots slightly slower than regular. Can't really tell them apart, otherwise.

3. Multimedia- Default not set or not working right. VLC not playing vids - only audio and shuts off early. SimpleVP similar results.

4. Easy containers need some instruction in the Question Mark. Afraid to test it without knowing what I'm doing... lol

Geany seems fine, Librewriter looks great, LibreCalc... good... Terminal in container working okay.

A few non-related thingos:

I downloaded your scripts to compile kernels but didn't have much luck. The scripts seem similar to the Woof scripts but didn't create the VMLinux (I think it was) or didn't put it in the proper place. I don't recall. I'll have to try again and report.

Also, tried multiple times in creating a contact and pw. on your website to PM - I always receive the e-mail pw but it never works when I try to login.

Also, did your Quirky Xerus Kernels support 32bit and 64bit too?

Anyway, thanks for another nice distro. Seems like it's not quite beta yet but a nice start....

...Oh, one last thing: I installed on a USB drive that had already been partitioned with Quirky Xerus. At first boot, Easy started doing its thing and did some automated reformatting of the 2nd partition to get it working right. Scared me at first... I thought it might be installing to my hard drive... but all okay and it ultimately booted properly with no negative affects noted.

I haven't had the opportunity to test VLC. The only change I made compared with Quirky, was added libcrystalhd, that it was reported on the Quirky forum thread is missing.

Try running "vlc" in a terminal, see if it outputs an error msg when try to run a video.

Yes, I understand the scare!
It is pretty safe code though, I doubt that it would do anything bad to your hard drive or whatever. It just fixes the GUID partition tables, and creates a second partition to fill the flash drive.
I could probably cut down the verbosity of it, so no one sees the "scary" bits.

Yes, the Quirky 4.4.x kernel also supports both 32-bit and 64-bit executables, but same problem with missing 32-bit libs.

Note, Easy is using kernel 4.10.1.

Haven't compared. Not sure why that would be.

One thing to note about SeaMonkey, the menu font is too big.
Fix it by editing this file:

/root/.mozilla/seamonkey/3o1ptd5r.default/chrome/userChrome.css

Edit this line:

font-size: 12pt !important;

Don't have access to Easy right now, but try change "pt" to "px" (points to pixels), or reduce the font size.

I think maybe, next thing I will do is get Easy going on the Raspberry Pi. It should be pretty straightforward.

I took my Pi3 to India and back, but never used it!
Oh well, the good intention was there!

I was in the north -- Delhi, Rishikesh, Allahabad.

I didn't completely miss Holi, even though I departed on the 8th. I stayed with some Indian friends for a couple of days before flying home, and just before i left for the airport, they smeared some colour on my face and took photos of me -- I was dressed to travel, in my only clean outfit, so grumbled a bit -- but I understand that it is a great celebration in India.

Okay. I broke the Seamonkey in Container. It worked the first few times and then, nothing. I installed right-click tools; not sure if it created some sort of conflict. Not sure how to boot Seamonkey container without the Menu so she's a goner.... for now.

Already after the above, I changed 12pt to 12px. Seems like it took longer with that fix... maybe I need to reboot first.

VLC is not working in terminal. I'm receiving the following errors:

Pulse Audio Server Connection Failure and Skins2 Interface Error. No Suitable Dialog Provider Found.

It hints to Compile QT4 plugin and make sure it's loaded properly.

I'm not sure if you've seen this, before. I'll try to find more info.

I couldnt get any video or audio with vlc or pmusic.

I tried audacious from the package manager and audio worked ok.

Galculator needs libquadmath.

I tried using the usb image tool.
But it wouldnt write to a used flash drive. It didnt like the previous efi boot partition.
After formatting the drive the usb image tool worked ok.

Installed to small 2GB SD card, in mini USB reader. Loaded and running well on two older dual core systems.

Same problems as others observed with VLC. Is this the same workaround required as Quirky 8.1.6 with the package name hack? Didn't try that yet. Just tried installing MPV and SMPlayer and that works fine.

Also some problems with speaker volume control. Always have to fiddle with it on this laptop with analog on 2nd card, but couldn't make it work here. Alsamixer worked though, to raise level and unmute, just not tray speaker icon control. Video and Youtube worked fine.

You can do it from a terminal:

Just in case it is still running:

# stop-container seamonkey

This will start the container and launch seamonkey:

# ec-chroot seamonkey

Also, it should be possible to run seamonkey, or any app, from within the "sh0" container.

Experienced a hard hang on 2nd laptop test system. Worked initially, but after installing a just a few things, hangs with black screen or frozen mouse pointer on black screen at late stage of bootup.

Only installed B43 firmware, configured networking, and installed MPV/SMPlayer and browsed and played some videos I think. Will go back later and see if I can reproduce.

For now, I was trying something else. Tested with a VirtualBox install onto VHD, and that went fine, fully functional. Then with a few things tested there, did a manual hard drive install on the laptop. Copied boot and work files into existing Windows and Quirky partitions respectively, edited BOOT_SPECS, and looks to be functioning fine.(much faster than the USB)

This time, tried the zvlc hack and that did get the VLC program to launch, but getting h.264 error when trying to play MP4 video. This workaround did work in Quirky 8.1.6.

kernel config

#20 Post by L18L »

Formerly my computer was running with video driver modesetting only.

drm can be enabled now but kernel needs to be configured for EDID.

Kernel configuration contains:

Code: Select all

#
# Direct Rendering Manager
#
CONFIG_DRM=m
CONFIG_DRM_MIPI_DSI=y
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=m
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_FB_HELPER=y
# CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE is not set
CONFIG_DRM_TTM=m
Please set CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE (m or y?)
