suggestions for future puppy development
suggestions for future puppy development
hi all
i don't know if this will be useful
but many people do not wish to become involved in github
so there is no place that they can post
their suggestions for future puppy development
and have a place where the puppy masters and everyone else
can read them and comment
this is the purpose of this thread

well since i started this thread
i might as well put in my 2 cents
i am using bionicpup32
which is woof-ce built
and i am very happy with it
so woof-ce (and peebee)
are producing an excellent distro
since woof-ce is so complex
i am only involved as a user
i am very interested in
(and this is my understanding of the project)
s243a idea
where there is a core
and a package manager that can download from different repositories
and i would like to see that developed
however once again it is too complex for me be involved
aside from as a user/tester
i continue to work on corepup
as a minimal modular system
which thankfully is simple enough
(with the help of many other people)
for me to play with
so there is is
i hope the puppy masters take the time to read this thread
i look forward to the input of others

Hi, wanderer.
As I said elsewhere, the devs should monitor the errors in xerrs.log and
remedy them until there are no more, whether creating a woof-CE recipe
or remastering a Pup, before publishing it.
No more "Give this half-baked Pup to 'Mikie' " attitude. "Mikie" being me
and all other unsuspecting users.
No more "Let the users come up with the errors. If they don't come up
with an error report, it's not an error, even if we know it is, from a
computing or moral point of view."
Users should require an error management report from the devs, not the
other way around.
Thoroughness, professionalism, a good work ethics towards the users, not
rounding corners: all those things PuppyLinux badly needs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also :
Let' snap out of the fascination for anorexic Puppies and distros. Most
users want a reasonably well-populated distro. They do not want to
populate it themselves.
They want to open their Puppy and play a song, write a letter or view a
movie right away, without being forced to go on the Internet for a week
gathering apps before they can use their Pup.
With a Puppy Package Manager that works when it feels like it, too...
Let's realize that OOTB, CoreLinux is absolutely ugly, slax has nothing to
offer under its belt, and you'll never be able to boot a Slitaz because it has
too few character sets for your keyboard and too few drivers for your
hardware.
TazPup by mistfire i was able to boot and enjoy a bit. The real Slitaz did
not fully boot, ever, on my machines. Period.
Here's what the user gets with anorexic distros: next to nothing. Let's
avoid that trap.
BFN.
As a relative newcomer to Puppy, but long time user of other smaller size distros, espcially Slax 5, 6 and 7s, and some Slackware, there's part of me that echoes what musher is saying about the minimalist attitude. That was probably what finally drove me away from Slax, that and the change to being Debian based...nothing against Debiam per se, but Slackware has always been hesitant to release "upgraded" versions just to meet some arbitrary timeline that really doesn't exist...anyway, I stumbled across Slacko Puppy 5, and having just about everything I needed all in one download was the selling point for me.
One thing that would really help new Puppy users would be a fairly complete listing of just what additional pets/SFSes work with which Puppy...it takes a bit of Dick Tracy and a sprinkling of Indiana Jones sometimes to determine if an application will work with a particular Puppy.
That, and as spirit mentioned, a quicker method of dealing with menu entries. Something along the lines of a "right click to add/delete/create folder" etc.
Overall though, I've come to appreciate the work that people with more talent than I have voluntarily given to this project!
A BIG THANK YOU!!!
Delete Menu Entry from Menu
Radky has already built something like that into PupMenu, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 540#611540. The second screenshot shows the Show-Hide Tab. Click it. The GUI which opens enables you to choose which applications appear. It does this by writing-into /usr/share/applications/THE_APPLICATION.desktop "NoDisplay=true" or deleting that argument.
Personally, I preferred his earlier version (6.0, I think) in which PupMenu just had a dual-pane with a radio button toggle (green displayed, red didn't). I included that one in Slacko 5.7.2CE.
PupMenu shows up on the Setup Menu-Category with the name Menu Manager -- edit the menu. If you have a recent Puppy with JWM as Window-Manager, you may already have it. If not, the application can be used under any Puppy.
I need to know more about corepup to see if it has the potential to be the base for Puppy9
hi lobster
i assume that puppy 9 will be woof-ce
however if you want to look at a really good system
to make a minimal modular "puppy like" distro
you should look at corepup
which is just tinycore with a few mods
i know you have made minimal systems in the past out of puppy
but this system has a great many advantages
over the more complex pivot root boot and layered file system of puppy
it uses symlinks to an initrd
so its very fast and simple
if you have any questions post and i will try to answer them
in addition
s243a idea to have a package manager
that can download from multiple sources
and link to a core
maybe using the symlink to an initrd system like corepup
would create an awesome distro family
and thanks for the link and interest
regards
If there is but one thing built with the next woof-CE zips that does not
work, a character-assassination squad for the whole bunch of professional
github woofers who participated in making that woof-CE zip will have to be
set in place and in motion.
To give them a taste of the medicine I've been tasting every now and then.
PuppyLinux should have no patience and no room for incompetents at the
top level who do not do enough double-checks.
If that is the end of woof-CE, so be it. In the name of the Father, of the Son
and of the Holy Ghost.
We will dock their pay when they make some bad code!
OH, they are doing all that coding for free
Woof-CE needs code testers too
A different set of eyes, can usually uncover mistakes, better than the one that did the coding!!
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
@mikeslr...
I'm NOT referring to editing the menu, I do know about PupMenu edit, as well as the JWM Menu editor...What I am referring to is the ability to have a RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON press/click or if using notebook the trackpad to respond to that click differently than a LEFT click as it seems want to do atm, it just launches the application. If I want to get rid of or modify a Menu listing, it would save time to be able to just right click, and choose from an option, say Modify, Delete, Run as Spot, Open terminal here, etc.
Wiz
ps...if it's already in PM Edit, I haven't stumbled across it yet...but I'm always hunting new stuff, hehe!
Research done. Without help from Buddha or the Holly Ghosties ....I need to know more about corepup to see if it has the potential to be the base for Puppy9
It does not. Corepup is damn small linux remastered.
Slacko which is nearing release? ... might be a base as it uses woof-ce and is stable. Also 32bit and 64bit
Here is what we have so far on the wikka wiki:
- 64 Bit, 32 Bit, ARM (Raspberry Pi version)
EasyDD and other ports from EasyOS, FatDog and derivatives
Remove menu - "right click to add/delete/create folder"
How possible in coding terms is it to have Menu styles?
eg: Noob, Geek, Programmer, General use, Minimalist, Everything etc?
Updater for bug fixes
Extended Quickpet
Help Desk/Guides/sponser a Noob (perhaps using Puppy Phone/email)
I am off to look for a logo ...
I don't think the standard standalone JWM windows manager has those capabilities that you want, that's why you need an additional application like JMW Menu Editor. It's a limitation of JWM.Wiz57 wrote:@mikeslr...
