Slacko 5.7.2 Community Edition
Sorry, you lost me. What did you do which was supposed to trigger Gnome MP? How do you know it wasn't? What application were you trying to launch? and what was the effect of Gnome MP not responding?kuman11 wrote:mike,
How to recognize the process of a non-responding Gnome MP in the list of processes?
But before answering any of those, recalling that you installed a window-manager other than jwm, does this relate to the "stock" version or your modified version? Gnome MP seems to be related to the Gnome shell which, AFAIK, isn't included in the original build.

mike,
Not sure if u're talking about Gnome MPlayer, which I meant, one instance of it isn't responding & I need to kill it. It slows down my Acer.
I use JWM as it's included, not modified.

Hi guys yesterday I started compiling on 5.7 so it should work on 5.7.2
I made a version of Gimp 2.4.7,, It took a lot work but its worth it personally I like it better than the latest its only 6MB and no extra deps, where as the one in Buster's repo is 110MB, I also made a really nice addon pet for gime, it has 105 extra brushes and 131 extra gradients. The reason why I like this version better than the latest you don't have to export png, jpg etc, you just same them. Plus it starts up really fast. Way less resources etc.
Next I made an older version Evince 464kb to replace ePDFView its way better, plus it does comic books and SVG etc, Its not just a PDF reader and less than 1/2MB its well worth it.
I also compiled the last inkscape lite with the ruler fixes, its works better than the one in the 5 series.

Also I think Uextract should also be included its very handy for large files http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 58&t=87864
And possibly update the puppy package manage, the one in 5 series doesn't allow you to download the packages just install them, which downloading them is also handy .
Also another Idea is maybe installing GT3 and apulse so people can install the latest Firefox if they wanted.

@ ttuuxxx:-
Click on Settings (the crossed spanner/screwdriver thingy).
Click on the 'Options' tab.
3rd checbox down, tick 'Use traditional, non-auto, user interface.'
Then hit 'OK'. It'll shut down, and re-start in the old style, complete with the ability to just download stuff rather install it...
Which I believe is what you want, yes?
Mike.
You can, actually. You need to change 'Options' under 'Settings'.ttuuxxx wrote:And possibly update the puppy package manage, the one in 5 series doesn't allow you to download the packages just install them, which downloading them is also handy.

I know what your talking about , but 5.7 doesn't have it, I'm not running 5.7.2, are you running 5.7.2? does that have it? lolMike Walsh wrote:@ ttuuxxx:-

@ ttuuxxx:-
Actually, I'm in Sailor's 5.7.1 at the moment; the 'upgrade' he did on the 'classic' 5.7.0.
Hang about. You say you're in 5.7? Wasn't that the no-PAE version Micko put together, built off 5.7.0?
Now, my 5.7.0 has the 'classic' package manager, which allows downloads-only, if that's what you want. So I don't quite see the problem.....though I believe the very last 'face-lift' on the PPM finally removed the ability to 'download only'. That's what has been 'decreed' by Woof-CE.
And Mike built this with the most recent Woof-CE build formula.....or so I believe.
(*shrug*)
You've got me confused now!! So; why was 5.7 done differently? Hell, man, you go back a lot further with Pup than I do; I always thought that all Pups used to have the ability to download packages only, without installing.....it was a standard function of the older-style PPM, wasn't it?

Yes it was the no-PAE Micko made, No option to download with it, it was the early days of this new package manager, I always like 2.14X better: I split the package manager into 2, so you just click the uninstall icon and it launches an uninstaller or the installer icon to install. I like big icons, lolMike Walsh wrote:@ ttuuxxx:-

Mavrothal had made a .PET for the old PPM to keep downloads and save where one likes.
Maybe some relevant history, maybe not.

KEEP TRACK OF SLAXXX 5.7
Hi All,
ttuuxxx has applied his skills to create a new version of Slacko 5.7 which, like this, is binary compatible to Slackware 14.0. ttuuxxx has an in-depth knowledge of Linux and is a master at compiling applications while I excel only in compiling errors.
So, you may want to consider running Slaxxx 5.7. And even if you've become fond of this Puppy, I recommend that you follow the Slaxxx 5.7 thread to see what applications he's created. There's a good chance they will function OOTB on this Puppy. You'll find the Slaxxx 5.7 thread here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 11#1022411

Handling Seamonkey's Cache
Hi Kuman11,
There are several ways maximize the amount of free RAM. As ozsouth mentioned on your other thread --opening 2 threads is frowned on-- one techniques is to use the nocopy boot option so that Puppies, on bootup, will only copy into RAM the bare minimum files.
But specifically freeing up RAM by not allowing cached files from the web to accumulate can be handled in a number of different ways. As was mentioned, one way is to reduce the amount of cache Seamonkey is permitted to accumulate. From Seamonkey's Menu, select Edit, then Preferences. In the Window which opens, in the left-most panel, you'll see the title Advanced at the bottom with a Left-Pointing Arrow. Click the Arrow and that section will open showing a listing for cache. Click the word cache, and window will open where you can reduce the amount of cache Seamonkey can accumulate and/or relocate where it is accumulated.
I relocate where cache is accumlated, but do it differently because I also want to relocate where firefox and palemoon store their cache. By default, cache is accumulated in /root. But you have to click rox's "Eye" to view it as it's a hidden folder. . Having opened one rox window to /root, and clicked the Eye, I opened a second rox window to my Slacko folder, Right-Click an empty space, select New>directory and gave it the name 'browserstuff'. Left-Click that folder and Click rox's Eye to view its contents even though its currently empty. Then, in the other window, click the .cache folder to enter it, Left-Press the Mozilla folder, Hold, then drag it into the browserstuff folder. Select Move. Left-press it again, hold, then drag it back to /root/.cache and select Link(relative). Cache will now be accumulated in Slacko's browserstuff folder on /mnt/home rather than in RAM. The attached screenshot shows that setup. The arrow at the top-left of the mozilla folder in the .cache folder shows that its a symbolic link. If I hover on it, it will tell me that it points to /mnt/home/slacko/browserstuff/cache/mozilla.
Even though I've gotten cache out of /root, I still don't want to preserve it. Its purpose is to speed up display a little bit while browsing as websites no longer have to download the information it already cached on your computer. But once I'm finished with a session of browsing cache is no longer of benefit to me. So I set Seamonkey to clear cache on exit. To do that, again Click Edit>Preferences. Select History. In the window which opens, the settings I use are to allow Seamonkey to Remember visited pages, but I select 0 days.
Also from Edit>Preferences> Under Privacy and Security, Click the Arrow so that you can configure how "Private Data" and "Cookies" are managed. Private Data can be set to clear any or everything when Seamonkey closes.
You should also know that you can clear Private Data at any time --even if you're not closing Seamonkey-- from the Menu: Tool >Clear Private Data.
If you've allowed cache/private data to accumulate it may take some time to clear.
Regarding rox's cache I don't really know what you're referring to. If you're referring to rox's configuration files, I wouldn't want to delete them. Frankly, other than cache, most of the files in /root are very small and are there to expedite how I run Puppies. While I do move web-browser profiles out to /root and symlinked back, that's because I run several Puppies all using the same profiles.
What I do recommend is that the /root/Downloads and /root/my-documents folders be moved to /mnt/home/SOMEWHERE and symlinked back.

"I also set Seamonkey to clear cache on exit, though it's often after awhile." Then you'll be glad to know that when you Menu>Tools>Clear Private Data it neither closes Seamonkey nor the Windows/Tabs you have open at that time.
About "mean traces of pics & other files from Apps that always accumulate" perhaps you're referring to /root/.thumbnails? Note the "." dot preceding its name. Click rox's Eye to show hidden files and folders.
Be careful deleting hidden folders and the files within them. They are hidden to avoid they're being accidentally deleted.
Personally, I prefer to set up Puppies to never Automatically Save. See this post: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 066#974066. The first thing I do after the First-Run configurations and creating a SaveFile is Menu>System>Puppy Event Manager, Set Save Session to Zero (0). Then install the applications I know I want and perform a Save. I check "Ask at Shutdown" not because I'm going to use Save at that time but rather it gives me a couple seconds to consider if there was some change I want to preserve. On shutdown/reboot whatever was in the /root folder in RAM is cleared and not written to the /root folder in your SaveFile/Folder. Nothing accumulates. If there was something I wanted to preserve, I'll reboot, make that change and manually Save. I only make changes immediately after booting up so only the changes I want are preserved.
